FECTAB says Belize has good track record for visitor safety

Tom Greenwood

In the aftermath of the gruesome discovery on Tuesday of four George Street Gang members, who had been brutally murdered, the U.S. Embassy has issued a security message for American nationals residing in and travelling to Belize. The advisory notes that, “while there is no indication that U.S. citizens are targeted or otherwise under direct threat, there is a possibility that retaliatory violence could take place. As a precaution, the Embassy’s regional Security Officer has advised U.S. government personnel to avoid travel to Belize City for the time being.” It can be another hit for the tourism industry, but FECTAB President, Tom Greenwood, says Belize has a good track record for visitor safety.

Tom Greenwood, President, FECTAB

“We refer of course, to the terrible scenario in Belize where crime is concerned. But I think that the majority of the people concerned both here and outside recognize that this was a singular situation. There is crime in every country and I think it is at the moment contained; the damage is not contained unfortunately. It’s out there that Belize is a little dangerous. So far, we have a twelve year history of cruise shipping without a single problem other than once, the robbery of a camera and I think once the robbery of a wallet and that was it. So thank God, so far that has gone on well and I think it can continue that way if public and private sector work together. Hence, I am calling for a conference of all concerned to rehash and rewrite the cruise ship industry agreements. We need to start right at the top there and then let it filter down.”

Who wants to go to a country where the pm and gov are constantly being accused of being involved in crime and murders where record murders are the being committed what you Thomas greenwood and the rest of society should be doing is kicking out this corrupt incompetent pm and gov. Enough is enough all 28 thousand of you that depend on tourism will soon be committing crimes yourselves when you have no jobs to be able to feed yourself and your families.

Apparently there are too many indiviuals in Belize who are only concerned about their ability/inability to make some money. They fail to see the bigger picture bacuse of their myopic vision. Currently in Belize there appears to be a serious leadership crisis, lawlessness, social ineptness, random violence, institutional greed/corruption coupled with many dysfunctional family system. In short, total failure in most Governmental Agencies and private sector to maintain equilibrium in the society at large. Despite, all of the desparation, deprivation and disarray in the society some individuals are only focused on business as usual and making money. Very sadly so this is is one of the many reasons why the jewel is currently in this horrific and dangerous condition that exsist throughout the country.

“There is crime in every country” is not a persuasive response.

I just read online the murder statistics for Los Angeles, an area about 30 times more populated than Belize. But the number of murders is almost exactly the same! (145 Belize, 166 Los Angeles). Our murder rate is 3,000% of the murder rate in L.A.!

But while they enjoy a 95% conviction rate in murders, we “enjoy” a 3% conviction rate. NUMBERS LIKE THOSE WILL SCARE THE PANTS OFF TOURISTS!

    Figures don’t lie.

Unless the whole country faces the grim facts AND DOES SOMETHING DRASTIC TO CHANGE THEM, how can we compete with other, less murderous Caribbean vacation spots?

By the way, just today I got an email from a friend of mine who is on a cruise ship right now — the ship notified the passengers that they will NOT be stopping here as planned due to the instability and security issues. I was looking forward to seeing him, too.

I lived in Belize (Inland-Cayo). Went to retire with my wife. Loved the GOOD people, culture, community. Bought a business, hired more employees, raised wages, bought a home and employed more workers (paid all required taxes). We were observed by the bad guys and when I was away, they attacked my wife (nearly killed her), terrorized her, robbed our home. Filed report but no help, action, or interest expressed from the police. Sorry, but we didn’t sign up for that. Yes, we left Belize and yes we are “clear.” The US Embassy was speaking of this incident but the truth is Ex-pats become targets. I staill Love the friends we have there and are heart broke.
