Aunt says cop choked her niece on Caye Caulker

Eden Velasquez

On Tuesday’s newscast we told you about seventeen year old Shaniel Soriano, a Caye Caulker resident who says she was slammed and choked by an officer on the island. After being examined by a doctor who classified her injuries as wounding, she reported the incident at the Raccoon Street Police station. Her aunt, Eden Velasquez is also quite upset about the incident.

Eden Velasquez, Aunt of Shaniel Soriano

“When my sister went back to the station, she told my sister that Ramos told her that Shaniel always tease him when she sees him. but my niece says, but when was it.”

Jose Sanchez

“If he tease her, she teased him, he has no right to hurt her.”

Eden Velasquez

“He has no right to do that to her. Her father left when she was one and my father raised her and my father never put a hand on any of them. He is not her father to do that. So we don’t accept that. So yesterday my sister met one of the police officers that was with Ramos in the vehicle at the moment. And he asked my sister, “Ma’am, the incident have you pushed the issue further?” He said ma’am I really didn’t know that that was your daughter and seh was underage.”

Jose Sanchez

“It doesn’t matter if she is underage.”

Eden Velasquez

“Exactly. So my sister told him that she’s pushing the issue further. He said that he thought that when Ramos came out of the vehicle, he thought Shaniel, my niece, was Ramos’ woman the way how he grabbed her. So he said they are having a domestic; so none of the police got in.”

Jose Sanchez

“Even in that sense, police are not supposed to abuse their power.”

Eden Velasquez

“Exactly, so that’s what my sister told him. He said ma’am, your daughter didn’t tell him anything. He just drove up and we got frightened when we saw all you guys at the police station because at that minute my sister went straight to the police station and gave her report. So my niece is very scared to go on the street because he threatened her. That’s the same reason why Belize is like this because of those same unlawful police officers.”

I hope our new ComPol will take a serious look at all allegations like this, and weed out the bad officers. If they can’t protect and serve, they shouldn’t be on the force.
