P.U.P. supports government’s stance against crime

Francis Fonseca

Just prior to the prime minister’s press conference, the People’s United Party issued its position on the unrelenting spate of crime and violence that continues to grip Belize City since the start of the New Year.  Opposition Leader Francis Fonseca, flanked by members of the party, held a press conference this afternoon to address public concerns arising from the multiple murders.  The P.U.P., says Fonseca, is willing to join forces with government and other social leaders to allay the fears of the citizenry.  Fonseca also denounced assertions by residents that this morning’s quadruple homicide was an extrajudicial assignment carried out by the state.

Francis Fonseca, Party Leader, P.U.P.

“This is not a political matter.  The easiest thing for us to do politically, as a party, is really to do nothing, to just stand on the sidelines and see and let things proceed as they are.  But we want to be engaged and I want to say publicly to the Belizean people that the People’s United Party has been and remains prepared to work with the government in any way possible to try and address this very serious challenging facing our country, in particular, facing Belize City.  I want to take this opportunity as well to really invite, if you may, or encourage the prime minister, and I am prepared to join him; let us go into these communities together and if we need to invite religious leaders to join us, other social leaders to join us.  Let us go into these communities together, our people in these communities need reassurance that in fact the state is on their side, that in fact the state is working to try to ensure that their lives are secure and safe, that their property is secure and safe.  I think we’ve reached this point in terms of the crisis we’re facing.  It’s very, very important, I think, for the Belizean people to see that there is national unity on this most important issue and I want to make that public appeal to the leader of this country, the prime minister, let us go together into these communities and meet with the people in these communities and listen to them, hear from them exactly what the challenges are that they are facing and let us work together in trying to solve some of these challenges.”

I’m happy to see the opposition isn’t trying to politicize our security crisis. It’s like winning a war, the leaders have to rise above base politics and be patriotic statesmen.
