P.U.P. condemns rumors of GSU involvement in crime

Francis Fonseca

Since the discovery of the four bodies this morning rumors have made their way onto the social media, particularly on Facebook, where it was posted that the homicides were the work of the Gang Suppression Unit.

Francis Fonseca, Opposition Leader

“The prevailing view of the public, certainly in the affected communities, seems to be that these killings were state-sanctioned killings.  I certainly don’t want to join in that and that’s why I am saying that it is so important for us to send that very clear message to these communities that in fact that is not the case, that in fact the state is not trying to destroy your communities.  In fact, we want to work with you and your communities.  So, you know, it’s a very, very serious matter but I think it’s important that we address it with a sense of urgency so that that message is very clear, loud and clear to the residents of those communities.  If we allow this thing to unravel any further we will have chaos, you know, for many days to come on the streets of Belize City.”

Government has denied the allegations of GSU involvement and the prime minister said today that he would welcome the opposition and others in the fight against crime.
