114 grams of marijuana in pocket; of course he is guilty

Michael Avilez

He is the first man to plead guilty to a serious offense this year; tonight fifty-two year old Ladyville resident, Michael Avilez is spending his first night of a three year sentence in jail.  This morning in the Court of the Chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith, Avilez took a guilty plea even before any witnesses could be called to testify against him. Because he had a previous conviction for a drug related offense, he could not be spared from going to jail and was handed a three year jail term. Avilez was busted on August fourteenth, 2012 with one hundred and fourteen grams of marijuana which police found in the pockets of his pants. The incident occurred on Central American Boulevard when officers of the Faber’s Road sub-formation were conducting a routine mobile patrol. An officer said he spotted Avilez and when he was stopped and searched, the marijuana was found.  Avilez had initially pleaded not guilty but this morning he changed his plea and is now behind bars.

Legalize it. Marijuana is a sacred sacrament bestowed to the poor and down trodden and all the people who chose to enjoy this precious gift. It eases the pain and sorrow of the afflicted. It makes the sad happy, its a mellow substance, all natural. When you compare marijuana to alcohol, marijuana wins every time. Drunken people chop each other; they kill the innocent on our highways while driving drunk; yet alcohol is legal and ubiquitous. All marijuana smokers want to do is to chill, listen to music, laugh, make jokes, feed the munchies and make love. The problem with marijuana is that our man made laws made it illegal thus creating a criminal element to the distribution and use. People who sell small scale marijuana do it because they make a little money to take care of their families. The real criminals are the big bwais (politicians, police and business men) who transport tons of cocaine through Belize and get away with it. This poor man who was illegally stopped and searched will do 3 years in jail while the big boys go free making millions. The war against marijuana is a Sisyphean task. Unless we take steps to legalize marijuana, we will be forever condemned with the problems of trying to solve it.
