Anti-crime measure to detain young persons with anti-social behavior

Dean Barrow

On Wednesday, Police and B.D.F. executed a search of a Crime Ridden area in the Lake Independence. Some residents were caught off guard while others said they cooperate fully with the police in the searches for which do not require warrants. That is only one anti-crime measure that is being undertaken; others have to do with the detention of young persons with anti-social behavior. PM Barrow explains.

Jose Sanchez

“In addition to Crime Ridden Areas, you also mentioned there would have been an additional part of the plan regarding the detention of people; who are displaced sociopaths. How does that work?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Well it hasn’t worked yet because it hasn’t been employed. The idea is that I think there are two bits of legislations that can be employed—one dealing with persons twenty-one years and under; say between eighteen and twenty-one, if they are convicted of two quality of life offenses can be subject to sort of a correction order made by a court. And we are thinking that if we can get those orders made, these people will be housed at the facility that we are refurbishing at the Mountain Pine Ridge that was used as a training site by the B.D.F. This will then be a re-education school. That sounds kinda like what they say Gulag Soviet type—but anyway, a retraining school that would be run by the B.D.F. The younger, the more youthful offenders and people who again are declared by social workers to be in circumstances that lend to anti-social activities, there is a law again that allows a social worker to make a report to a magistrate and for an application then to be made also for such a young person to be housed as well in a facility. It wouldn’t be the B.D.F. one because we want to separate the younger people from the older people. But at the cadet core camp and at Wagner’s—I forget the name of the other facility—so the idea is to go after two age groups and to try to get these persons off the streets and into institutions. As well, Restore Belize and the police are coming up with a plan to assist with community rehabilitation in these same crime infested neighborhoods. All I know is that it is going to cost me some more apart from the hundred thousand a week now for the interdiction efforts; but it must be done.”

On top of that..donate some land and teach them to work it. Why do we need to be importing so much food when we can grow it here? Teach them to work for what they have. Why should we slaving 8 hours a day to upkeep lazy people who prefer to go to jail for a year than to be out here working for food?
