Garbage Company plans to protest City Hall again

A second round of protest against City Hall is planned for this Wednesday by employees of Belize Waste Control Limited. The protest began on Monday by twenty employees of forty who had been laid off because City Hall was in arrears of more than ten weeks to the BWC. General Manager of BWC, George Lamb, says that the council’s owes the company over six hundred thousand dollars and despite a payment of one hundred and twenty-seven thousand five hundred dollars made by CitCo last week, the company is still strapped for cash. But Lamb is taking issue with statements made by Mayor Darrell Bradley. Firstly, he says the mayor is not sticking to his word because back in September, Bradley agreed that after making a three-week payment, BWC was to start receiving double payments each week until City Hall had cleared its debts. Secondly, Lamb says that contrary to what Bradley said on Monday, the Council is mandated to regulate the collection and removal of garbage, which BWC and Belize Maintenance Limited have been contracted to do. Thirdly, Lamb says the Mayor has no open door policy and has refused to meet with BWC.

“What the mayor said on the interview was really surprising to me; I was taken aback. I don’t believe that he is true to his word. I would like the mayor to show you where he made those three payments as he promised us; he made two and half payments. We are not fighting for anything that we don’t deserve. We have already done the job. We have already put our workers out there and incurred expense and we did our job. It is time now for the mayor to pay up.”

Duane Moody

“If the employees are not being paid by BWC, it is because BWC is not paying them and not the City Council not paying them.”

George Lamb

“That was embarrassing; I wouldn’t have believed that the mayor would have resorted to those kind of tactics and in fact come publicly and make those statements. The mayor knows and everybody in this City knows that if we don’t get our money from the mayor, then we won’t be able to make our payments and even pay our salaries. So if we are not getting payments from Belize City Council, then I would like to ask the mayor, “Where else would he want us to get the money to pay our employees?”

Duane Moody

“He furthermore said that garbage is a burden to the City Council and it is not his mandate or the council’s mandate to actually take care of garbage. It is for infrastructural development for streets and drains; not garbage.”

George Lamb

“That’s amazing; that’s amazing. I don’t know. Mister Bradley surprises me at every turn. In the City Council Solid Waste Bi-laws, I think, section thirty, subsection B—I’m not quite sure—but it clearly shows that it is the council’s responsibility to regulate, to engage and to provide such services for the citizens of Belize. It is their responsibility to ensure that the waste is being moved from Belize City to the disposal site. Now what they did, they subcontracted out Belize Waste Control and based on that contract they are obligated—not only by law, but also by the contract.”

Duane Moody

“He is saying that there is an opened door policy there at the City Council and that he has been in dialogue with this company with regards to the fact that during November and December they have their taxes and of course they won’t be able to make payment and they have communicated this with you guys and of course in the past this courtesy has been extended to the previous administration and now why is it that this courtesy isn’t being extended to them this year?”

George Lamb

“Listen we did our best. We have been over the past three months, since August, we have been trying to get City Council to make payments on outstanding invoices that we have submitted to them. For some reason, we have written them a lot of letters and they have never responded to any. We have tried to make phone calls; we have tried to set up appointments—he is not in the country, he is unavailable, he is in a meeting. I would like to know what he means when he talks about by open door policy because I would have used that recourse.”

Businesses just try and not pay your trade or liquor licenses next month and see how fast Citco comes and shuts you down. No courtesy extensions even though your business probably lost lots of money due to all the road closures.
PAY YOUR BILLS CITCO! People need for eat!

  2. Storm says:

How much public money has Mayor Bradley spent on his road contracts? Were those contracts properly budgeted and authorized?

Why did he not spend some of it for the garbage collection?

Something smells bad in Citco, once again.

Just another part of the corrupt gov. He can’t pay the garbage company but he can afford to buy a ninety eight thousand dollar hilux brand new truck for him to drive Belize pm and gov say they don’t have money to pay their bills but Bradley can afford to drive a truck costing almost one hundred thousand dollars if this is not corruption I don’t know what is what a pathetic pm and gov. But only the people of Belize deserve it for being stupid and allow these people in this gov. Fu thief right in front of your face and you sit around and do nothing we need to kick them out now put all of them in jail from the pm down .
