People with Anti-social behavior to be targeted in crime strategy

George Lovell

The five areas that the Ministry of National Security intends to be demarcated as Crime Ridden will not be confirmed until Thursday when it is expected that the initiative will go through its final procedural stage of being gazetted. But at the Business Forum on November first, Prime Minister Dean Barrow also hinted that there would be another element to the crime fighting plan which included the utilization of little known laws that could help to detain people who exhibit anti-social behavior.  Both the Ministry of National Security C.E.O. and the Crime Control Council Chairman agree that the measure would be implemented possibly along with possible inclusion of offenders in the training facility that is expected to be constructed in the Mountain Pine Ridge area.

“Yesterday the World Bank representatives were here; they gave great compliments to the BOOST program. However, they were saying that vulnerable groups such as children, skills training for adults; that these are areas that are not necessarily being met and that is also part of the problem that we are facing in Belize.”

Ret. Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“Certainly, we have a program that will be hinged on the post operations that we intend to do under this act and that speaks to our corrective training that we intend to do for those people who we identify as being some of the youths that are involved in criminal activity. We are hoping that that program will address that need in a very short time so that we can in fact equip those individuals after a period of corrective training to come back and reintegrate into society. And make their society a little bit more productive.”

Jose Sanchez

“In addition to the demarcation of the areas, I believe the Prime Minister specifically mentioned arresting people who display anti-social behavior using little known laws. What laws are those and are you aware of that?”

Michael Young

Ret. Col. George Lovell

“In terms of the anti-social behavior, there is within our laws and it is quite clearly defined; I think there are some schedules in there, but it is under the same crime control and criminal justice act. I can’t speak to the details just yet.”

Michael Young, Chairman, Crime Control Council

“But the intent really is not to just simply arrest and confine youth and so on. The intent really is to identify youths who have these social difficulties. And having identified them, to reach out to them and if necessary perhaps put them in programs. There is community service for instance and there is the corrective training facility which the colonel spoke about.”

The devil is in the details. Let’s see how they define “anti-social behavior.”

Vague terms like that have been used by dictators to lock up dissidents for decades, probably for millennia. I have a friend who was arrested and held in Nicaragua under the Sandinistas for “gestures against the revolution.” His real crime was being an opposition lawyer who criticized Daniel Ortega.

When it comes to anti-social behavior, I fear Uncle Benji, Rod, several others and I could all end up sharing a cell just for what we post here.

How do you define anti-social ? Both the attorney and the CEO look anti social to me. If I saw them coming down the same street with me , I will cross to the other side.

It is so unfair in the meeting everyone have a laptop or some thing to take notes the idiots puts all the food in front of the CEO, Judith don’t let those idiots gets away with that…I/we are proud of how your life turns out, I always used to wonder what would become of you Norine ET-AL, I remembered smiling when you guys/gals would be walking around talking in your British/English accent. you did well keep up the good works!

Youths… I was wondering because it can be said that I display anti-social behavior, because from home I go straight to work and from work i go straight home and on the weekends I spend it at home with my family, I don’t go around socializing at the bars, night spots, prostitute joints, house parties, the politicians and their political rallies can go to hell in a metal basket and I couldn’t careless! Isn’t those anti-social traits/behavior? I hope that it isn’t because plenty of us older independent heads will suffer under this arrogant and vindictive PM…Or better yet many of us older heads will retaliate RETALIATE!!!
Lets see maybe they will get the right persons/groups.

Anti-Social Behaviour – is behaviour that lacks consideration for others and may cause damage to the society, whether intentionally or through negligence. This is opposed to pro-social behaviour, which is behaviour that helps or benefits the society. Antisocial behavior is labeled as such when it is deemed contrary to prevailing norms for social conduct. This encompasses a large spectrum of actions. Murder, rape, use of illegal substances, and a wide variety of activities are deemed anti-social behaviours.

Asocial Behaviour – refers to the lack of a strong motivation to engage in social interaction and/or the preference for solitary activities. Developmental psychologists use the synonyms “nonsocial,” “unsocial,” and “social disinterest”. Asocial is distinct from antisocial as the latter implies an active dislike or antagonism toward other people or the general social order.

Why is it always one set of lawyers we have other lawyers in Belize if it should not be just Barrow n friends doing legal work and getting all this big time law matters

  7. Ricky Malthus says:

@ Subkonshus: Per your definition that describes Barrow and his regime. That definition describes his entire family and their off-springs. Go check another text, Subkonshus. Remember the old Aphorism- Beware the man who read only one book!!1
