Youth Week celebrated at Youth for the Future

Youth Week 2012 officially commenced on Sunday with an interdenominational mass held in Belmopan.  Activities in Belize City have been dampened by the untimely death of Gayle Escarpeta, who was instrumental in organizing the weeklong festivities.  Despite the somber mood, an open day was held today at the organization’s headquarters where primary and secondary school students participated in a number of educational events.  Those activities also included cooking.  This morning News Five spoke with Crystal Dacoff, an employee of the Department of Youth Services.

“This open day is to launch the opening of Youth Week which yesterday we had the ecumenical service which was held in Belmopan at the UB gymnasium where we had the march and then we had a little sporting events within each district. And then this is just the open day to it to showcase to the community what Youth for the Future is all about. And here behind me is the Grace cook-off sponsored by Grace Kennedy; all items are from Grace Kennedy. So we have here behind us the girls from E.P. Yorke High School preparing their dishes and then later on in the afternoon we’re gonna have Gwen Liz competing as well.”

“Talk to us about what can be expected from activities for the remainder of the week?”

Crystal Dacoff

“Well actually, we are kinda freelancing as I said due to the passing of our coworker, but tomorrow we have a cleanup campaign held in the Jane usher Boulevard where we have some young people going through the community cleaning up; maybe cutting some yards; picking up some garbage and then after that we are just gonna freelance from there because we are still at an unbalance today due to the loss of our colleague.”

I hope her murder is avenged.

You murder one chinese, and the entire Chinsese business community shuts down to morn and pay respect for the life lost. Now thats showing regard for human life, among other things. On the contrary, a creole young woman is killed. Not any creole young woman, but one who was actively involved in “Youth for The Future” and all sorrounding initiatives and activities. But yet we are celebrating? It shows that we as a society have become very callous towards the crime situation and have no regard for human life. The thugs and gangs committing these murders are just a reflection and TRUE representatives of how cold and heartless we have become as Belizeans towards one another. We are decades away from solving this crime situation in Belize…DECADES. I predict that 2 generations would have to die out completely before Belize comes back to what it used to be.

subKonshus is right, there should at least me some kind of memorial for her by Youth for the Future, and when better to do it than during Youth Week. Not something they would have planned for, but I hope they can do something public for her memory.
