$10 to pick up your garbage

Darrell Bradley

But the following story is not a lie; Belize City residents can expect to receive an additional monthly bill for garbage collection as of mid-December, to be paid during the Mawga season in January 2013.  The ten dollar fee will apply to households and not businesses, according to Mayor Darrell Bradley and will be used to defray the forthcoming municipal bond.  Earlier today, we caught up with Bradley after he met with executives from the Belize Water Services Limited to finalize an agreement which will allow the company to function as a collection agent for the Belize City Council.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“We’re moving steadily ahead with the launch of our municipal bond prospectus which we expect to be launched on the November fifteenth.  I just reviewed the final draft and we are getting ready and we are very excited.  Part of that calls for the imposition of a residential garbage fee and this is a ten dollar fee which will be charged per household, residents, not businesses, residents and we mean to use BWS as a collection agent for this.  I just got out of a meeting with some of their management team and we’re talking about the technical side in terms of putting that in place.  We’re formalizing the process and this will become a reality in the billing cycle in the month of December and so they will send out bills.  The first bill for the residential garbage fee will be sent out in December and it will be due the first week in January and then it will a monthly bill thereafter and it’s going to be ten dollars per resident in Belize City.”

Garbage bags have been left at my gate on numerous occasions. Many times i can recalling coming home from work and find half of the bags that i set out still there because they don’t feel like spending an extra 20 seconds to pick it up. I hope that my $10 will resolve this issue.

Belizeans have enough to deal with now they have to pay to pick up their garbage? Oh well I can tell you what Belize will be one STINKING place to be at. Good Luck you’all.

  3. Resident says:

Did he mean to say $10 per residence??? The last sentence in his stament reads “The first bill for the residential garbage fee will be sent out in December and it will be due the first week in January and then it will a monthly bill thereafter and it’s going to be ten dollars per resident in Belize City.”

  4. Hustle says:

This is absolutely absurd. Bad enough that most of the funds for the Municipal Bond will come from taxpayer Social Secirity Board funds ( as ususal) but now we have to pay a fee for garbage collection? I thought that was the reason why we pay property taxes and every other tax and license fees…

Wasn’t cost of living supposed to go down 5 years ago?

Well at least our streets have been paved with cement…I guess.

  5. Its a SHAME says:

a garbage tax. every Monday that is a holiday means that entire Northside will look like a dumpsite that week. that bull about wednesday is white garbage day for three limbs tec is BS . I have cut my three and the limbs stay there for months. the muck from the drains stay on the street side for months, causing a stench, obstruction for parking until eventually it erodes right back into the drain. these are all deficiencies that don’t require any more money to change but the will to do things better. mark my word this imposition of tax without results will spur the appeaarance of illegal dumping sites. the people are fed up!!

Hmmm guess I will have to start burn my trash from now on…

  7. Elgin Martinez says:

What about providing every home with a decent garbage can, that would make more sense.

  8. WILD ROSE says:

I cannot believe people are complaining about paying $10.00 a month for picking up garbage! This is the kind of mentality that has our country where it is today…we want everything for free….so much for civic pride! What we need to be saying is “we will pay the ten dollars but we are demanding better garbage collection services!” come on people!

  9. Storm says:

    1. How was this fee arrived at and put into law? It’s just another tax, and should follow the legal process for new taxes.

It may be reasonable, but the Mayor and Citco shouldn’t be able to put their hands in our wallets just so, without going through the public process required.

    2. THE CITY BOND IS A MISTAKE. Bond = more debt. We are already broke, our children will be burdened their whole lives paying for debt accumulated before they were born.

CITCO MUST LIVE WITHIN ITS MEANS. Don’t borrow for anything. Politicians seem to have no conscience about thieving, they just want to bum rush the bank.
