Youth For the Future employee shot on his way to work

Delone Vernon

When IBIS becomes operational it will be critical in assisting the police in the solving the following types of crime.  An office assistant from Youth For the Future was shot as he made his way to work. Delone Vernon was targeted at about six this morning; his relatives believe they know who shot him. Luckily, Vernon underwent surgery successfully and is in a stable condition. Duane Moody has that report.

Thirty year old Delone Vernon was on his way to work from his Sibun Street home when upon reaching the corner of Sarstoon and Ebony Streets—just two blocks away from his work—a gunman approached him and fired several shots; two found their mark on Vernon. The shooting happened just after six this morning.

Voice of: Therese Stephens, Relative of Victim

“This morning when we get the phone call, Tyrone Meighan and some next guy shot ahn while he was going to work. ih get three shot—two ina ih belly and one ina ih hip. Delone work fi Youth for the Future; ih dah noh bad bwai. Every morning that dah Delone hours when ih goh dah work.”

Duane Moody

“Is Delone known to be a bad person? Why is it that this person wanted to kill him?”

Voice of: Therese Stephens

“Mi bredda, dehn just out fi kill people—dehn lee bwai deh. Because dehn dah from Ghost Town, so dehn just out fi hurt people. So this dah lone fool, I need wah stop to be done. Delone dah noh wah bwai weh mess with nobody—ih dah wah hardworking young man—from work to home. That dah he.”

Vernon has been working as an office assistant at Youth for the Future for the past four years. The incident has shocked his coworkers at the institution, says Violence Reduction Unit Manager, Kirk Augustus.

Kirk Augustus

“He basically plays a role in taking out correspondents, bringing back correspondents to the office. And he relieves the night security in the morning. So this morning when he was coming in to relieve the night security; that’s when the incident took place. At the department of Youth services, it really affects us because we try our best to live as a family and when you find that something like this happens, the whole entire department feel it and feel down. So this morning it was really a go slow because we know Delone from 2008 when he came on board; didn’t have a diploma, but they gave him a job as the office assistant. He went back to school and get his GD through the night school at Gwen Liz.”

According to Therese Stephens, Vernon’s shooting occurred in the wake of another shooting on Thursday afternoon. The bullet holes on the house are the telltale signs of the incident. No one was injured and police recovered the shells from the scene.

Voice of: Therese Stephens

“Yesterday, the same Meighan come and buss four shot from across di Canal when I was talking to wah friend. The four shot ih buss, the police come and find the four shells. We have three bullet holes on the wall.”

Vernon underwent surgery this morning at the K.H.M.H. and is in a stable condition. Duane Moody for News Five.

Whoever did this shooting should die in prison. Or during his arrest, he is obviously armed and dangerous.

From what I’ve heard, the victim has made a good effort for 4 years to stay on the right path, and if that’s so, he is to be commended as a role model for others to stay out of gangs.

  4. Belizean Pride says:

looks like tinted vehicle scandal was a waste of time and now the trend is walking and by bicycle which seems to be getting way out of hand. hope they can find a solution to this problem affecting us daily with crimes (shooting).

  5. Hardworking Bzean says:

Tinted vehicle applies only for us middle class Belizeans…..just look around and see who have tinted windows on their vehicles and nothing gets done about it!! Let it be one of us of the not “high class” social people of Belize, poor us, ticketed and punished in the blink of an eye!! We all need to come together all across, as the Cayo residents, and show this Gov’t and criminals that we want no tyrants in our beloved jewel! That is the only way we will get back our BELIZE people…..we need to stand up for our RIGHTS!!! Vigilante style if that’s what it will take!!
