Foam house burns down 3 years later

If you looked to the sky this afternoon, a large plume of smoke was hovering over the George Price Highway at the entrance to Belize City. The foam house for the Belize Foam and Furniture Limited at mile two and a quarter on the highway caught on fire for the second time in three years. The first fire at the bungalow located behind the main office building occurred on August twenty-seventh, 2009 and it caused over seventy eight thousand dollars in damages. News Five spoke to Colonel Francis Thomas who said the fire service responded to the call at three-thirty-four p.m.

Lt. Col Francis Thomas, Fire Chief

“We responded to a call of a fire here at the Foam Factory at about fifteen-thirty-four. As you notice, we had a fire at the chemical house that you have there—that is where they make the foam. From our preliminary sighting, it appears that it was caused through a chemical reaction that went out of hand. The investigation definitely will confirm later on as to what actually caused.”

Francis Thomas

“What was stored inside?”

Lt. Col. Francis Thomas

“Chemicals, these were chemicals that they use to make foam.”

Jose Sanchez

“Is this fire similar to the last fire that burned down this structure?”

Lt. Col. Francis Thomas

“Well I understand there was a fire here a few years ago. I am not sure as to the status of that fire so I am not sure if it is similar.”

Jose Sanchez

“Employees of the business say chemicals that overheated caused the last fire. Is this also going to be part of your investigation here?”

Lt. Col. Francis Thomas

“Yes, definitely we will be looking into that.”

Jose Sanchez

“Any indications of whether or not the structure was insured?

Lt. Col. Francis Thomas

“No, we are not sure yet. Right now as you notice we are still fighting the fire. a bit later we will get all the particulars?

Jose Sanchez

“Was there anyone in the facility or near the facility at the time of the fire?”

Lt. Col. Francis Thomas

“Yes, there were three workers in the facility at the time that were mixing the chemical and working on the production of the foam.”

In 2009, Foam and Furniture’s manager Charles Abou-Nehra told News Five that the foaming box, the foaming cylinder, the mixer, the building and some foam blocks were consumed by flames. The building was insured by Insurance Corporation of Belize three years ago. Whether or not the building is currently insured is not yet known.

  1. Storm says:

Are these chemicals safe for nearby residents and passersby to breathe?

Should there be an environmental investigation here, and steps taken to protect humans in the area, or to move the chemicals away from people?

I’m no chemist, but those questions jump readily to mind. GOB tries to do too much in other areas, but protecting the people of Belize in matters such as this, crime, and national defense are legitimate responsibilities of the government.

Hmmm. Check the books. Look at sales.

In the Arab world, there is a remedy for companies that are struggling with poor sales, or facing bankruptcy. In the name of Allah, you burn it to the ground. Burn it once, and if you don’t succeed at first, keep trying. The insurance company has to pay.

    Money problems resolved.
