Prime Minister expects Telemedia dividends to be issued in months ahead

Dean Barrow

Telemedia held its annual general meeting on Friday. The dividends were not issued because of an injunction granted by the Caribbean Court of Justice just prior to the meeting. There is still litigation before the courts challenging the nationalization of the telephone company so the court ruled that the dividends should not to be paid before December fourteenth. Since the government is the majority shareholder with over sixty three percent of the company, it decided to comply with the CCJ ruling. When News Five spoke to the PM earlier today, he said he expects dividends to be issued to shareholders in the next few months.

Jose Sanchez

“Telemedia had their AGM on Friday. Of course, the Court order was there. Do you foresee that the shareholders will receive their dividends by December fourteenth?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I think so. What I read in terms of the order of the Court was precisely that: that the declaration and payment of the dividends should be postponed until a date not before the fourteenth of December. There was no suggestion that there is any liberty given to the Ashcroft Alliance to reapply before that date to have the deadline extended even beyond. It seems to be a straight finite fixed order. So unless something else happens in respect to some other court cases, it is in my view, axiomatic that the dividends will be paid immediately after the fourteenth December of this year.”

The Telemedia case will go before the Court of Appeals on October eighth.
