Couple lucky to be alive after vehicle flips during highway accident

A Belmopan couple is lucky to be alive tonight after a horrific accident on the George Price Highway this afternoon. Mohiddin Kharuri and his seventeen year old girlfriend were heading to Belize City when he lost control of the vehicle and hit the edge of a culvert. The SUV flew into the air before landing in the bushes off the side of the road and then flipped several times. Kharuri and his girlfriend were flung from the vehicle as it turned over. They were rushed to the Western Regional Hospital and News Five was on the scene shortly after. We spoke to Jimmy Dueck, owner of Jimmy’s Wireless in Belmopan where Kharuri works as cell phone technician.

Jimmy Dueck, Owner, Jimmy’s Wireless

“I was called and they told me that he was involved in an accident on the way to Belize City. So I came out here to check it out to see what happened and by the time I reached, both him and his wife had been in the vehicle and they were both on stretchers. His wife was in an ambulance already and I helped them load him onto the ambulance. He recognized me, but the EMT guy said that he has a big cut right here that goes all the way down to his bones and she broke at least one arm.”

“Do you have any idea or has anyone mentioned to you what may have caused the accident?”

Jimmy Dueck

“Well, we’re certain that it is because of the wet road and the road is very slippery here. A passerby told me that he had seen in the mirror that the vehicle had gotten out of control not too far from here and then it had sort of rolled like a ball, just started rolling and then ended up here about a hundred feet off the road.”

“Do you know if any of their injuries are life threatening at this point?”

Jimmy Dueck

“I believe they will be okay, but I can see it will take a few months for them to recover from what happened to them.”

Once again, apparently no seatbelts in use — they would not have flown out. They are lucky to be alive.

But it wasn’t “wet roads” that caused the accident, it was bad driving under wet conditions. Any fool knows to slow down as much as necessary for the road conditions.

Storm please get your facts straight next time. The road was wet at witness that saw the accident said his vehicle started sliding in attempt to stop the vehicle. According to a traffic officer he said that them no wearing seatbelt saved their lives. Had they not been thrown out of the vehicle they would probably not be alive today.

  3. Jewel says:

How many more lives and accidents like this before something is done to fix those parts of the highway that are so dangerous when it gets wet?

  4. Jeeboo says:

So Rod, from your point of view, how could our PM possibly cause a young couple this much pain? Just sayin …

  5. Belizean says:

Agree with “JIM” …I would like to ask Storm if he even looked at the picture posted here. Storm, do you really think this couple would have stayed alive if they had stayed inside the vehicle? My condolences and sympathy to this couple, and hopefully Jimmies Wireless will not suffer too much with the absence of this employee.

  6. iris-shjc says:

well i believe it was the wet these timeS, rain have caused alot off accidents.

  7. Star says:

ok…by now all drivers should know how that stretch of the highway gets when it is wet…so how much miles per hour would you be have to be driving to flip so much times?

  8. Storm says:

I read and understood the story. I just believe that it is RARE that you are better off being thrown from a vehicle, so your braincase can be smashed somewhere, instead of being secured. I was a passenger in a high-speed roll-over accident long ago, and I think seatbeltssaved me, although the car was as crushed as the photo, and I ended up with bruises from the seatbelts.

I didn’t say the road was dry, I know it was wet — and I know when a road is wet, I have to slow down to a safe speed for those conditions. If I roll my car in the rain, no other vehicle involved, it will almost certainly be my own fault.

  9. Bear says:

It’s better to be lucky than smart. These folks are very fortunate to survive a serious crash without wearing seatbelts.

This isn’t really a matter of serious debate — it’s easy to research and find out the statistics on lives saved by use of seatbelts. Take chances with your own life if you want, but I’ll play the odds and use a seatbelt.

  10. Reality says:

Panic caused that accident. He was speeding – obviously – and began to feel himself losing control. so he hit the brakes hard. WRONG. Panicked grabbed the steering wheel too tight and flipped. A vehicle in that condition had to be going at least 65 miles an hour.

And to the smart people, how rare of a coincidence it would have to be for both of them to be wearing seat belts and for both of them to be flung from the vehicle. THINK.

Take care of how you drive on the roads. Remember its not only you that’s using it.
