Stolen car, but lawyer proves owner not quite yet owner
When he appeared in court earlier this year, Maintenance worker, Charles Requeña had pleaded not guilty to the charge of handling stolen goods, but it wasn’t until today that he was freed of the single charge. In March of this year, a car, valued at three thousand two hundred dollars, was stolen from in front of the house of Yadir Reyes and recovered almost two weeks later on New Road in Belize City. The case fell apart in court today, when under cross examination, Reyes said that the vehicle wasn’t his and that he was still paying for it. A second witness was called, PC Wilber Thompson, who had testified earlier this year that he saw the car on Freetown Road with two persons on inside, contrary Reyes’ claim of where the stolen car was found. Requeña was represented by Attorney, Michael Peyrefitte who made a no case submission on behalf of his client. Since Requeña’s arrest earlier this year, another man, eighteen year old Rodolfo Carrera, was charged for the theft of the vehicle. Carrera had pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced to three years in jail in April of this year.
