Eddie gutted after being released on bail

In the west, Eddie Antonio Sanchez had a most violent death less than twenty-four hours after he was released on bail. San Ignacio Police found his lifeless body lying face down in a pool of blood early on Friday morning at the farm where he worked as a caretaker. Sanchez’s throat was slashed and he had multiple chop wounds to the back of his head, face, and on both ankles. Sanchez was the thirty-five year old caretaker of Liberty Farm in Santa Elena. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

Delahnie Bain, Reporting

The caretaker of Liberty Farm in the Santa Cruz area of Santa Elena was murdered sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, when his body was discovered on the farm road. Thirty-five year old Eddie Antonio Sanchez’ throat was slashed and he was violently chopped with a machete. His brother-in-law, Danny Portillo, says the victim’s father found out about his death in a most unfortunate way

Danny Portillo, Brother-In-Law of Murder Victim

“The only information that I actually can give you is that we found his body at around eight-thirty. His father actually was on his way to his work close to the farm where Eddie use to work and he saw the patrol was in front and they were picking up a body. When he got close he found out it was his son.”

“What kind of injuries did he have?”

Danny Portillo

“According to police it was about five injuries from machete to the neck, head and close to his point and close to his feet. At this moment actually the body is in Belize City so we’re waiting actually for the body to arrive in San Ignacio.”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“Around seven-thirty-five a.m. police visited a scene on Pilgrim Road in Santa Cruz area where they saw the lifeless body of a Hispanic male person faced down in a pool of blood. This person was identified as Eddie Antonio Sanchez, thirty-five years caretaker of San Ignacio town.”

What is known so far is that Sanchez was charged for Aggravated Assault on Wednesday; he was released on bail on Thursday and by Friday morning he was dead.

Danny Portillo

“The previous day, on Thursday, he was released on bail from jail because he had a little argument with a traffic officer, but that’s the only thing we know he was released on bail Thursday.”

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

Fitzroy Yearwood

“Police identified this person because Sanchez was arrested and charge for Aggravated Assault reported on the twenty-sixth September 2012 and he was on Court bail granted on the twenty-seventh. The person named in that report has been detained for questioning and our investigation into that matter continues.”

While police are investigating, Sanchez’ family has also been looking for clues, but what happened on the farm remains a mystery.

Danny Portillo

“Up to now, we have been trying to investigate along with the police to see if anybody knows about any noise or anything that happened the day before but we have not found any valuable information.”

Delahnie Bain

“Have you spoken to any of his coworkers or so?”

Danny Portillo

“Yes, we tried to find out information from his coworkers but he used to be a person that most of the time he would just come home, visit his mother and he used to have mostly like a private life; he never use to actually share anything with them. We went to his home to pick up his personal belongings and honestly we haven’t found any sign that somebody broke into his home and so to be honest, we were searching around the home also to find any clues of blood or anything but we haven’t found anything yet.”

The sudden murder has left the family shaken as they now prepare to lay Sanchez to rest.

Danny Portillo

“That shocked the whole family because we never expected something like that is going to happen and it’s a really hard time for all of us.”

Delahnie Bain

“And you all have started working on funeral arrangements and so on?”

Danny Portillo

“Actually, yeah that’s what we’re working on since Friday, Saturday and today the body is supposed to be at home.”
