Sports Monday, James Adderley; amazing highlights

James Adderley

Good evening I’m James Adderly and this is Sport’s Monday.

Week 6 of the PLB season saw Paradise Freedom Fighters being hosted inside the  Isidoro Beaton Stadium by the Belmopan bandits as both teams sought to take advantage of the out of zone schedule to move up to the standings in their respective zone. The 1st real highlight comes almost half an hour into the ballgame when Edward Pandy Jr. tries to pick out Denmark Casey but goalkeeper Alton Garbutt comes up with the necessary intervention. Less than a minute later Victor Franco of Freedom Fighters outruns the bandits’ defense and is unceremoniously cut down from behind by Ian Gaynair who just completed a 2 game suspension.  Rightfully the referee rules penalty and Gaynair is chased off the field of play by the red card. Delroy Flores steps up for the visitors from the South but this PK attempt was never going to be a goalkeeper of Woodrow West’s caliber. Victor Franco then launches this left foot floater into the danger zone and against West passes the test.

At the 35th minute this defensive lapse gives possession to David Trapp who punches it with the right foot and Belmopan Bandits go up 1-zip. 5 minutes after intermission the host team doubles its lead when David Madrid slices through traffic to beat Alton Garbutt after picking up his own rebound. It’s all Belmopan when David Trapp fires this bouncer but this time goalkeeper Garbutt handles the situation. It’s David Trapp a minute later turning provider for Gilbert Suazo who crushes this header for the 3-zip lead at the 56 minute. The Bandits go on to post the 3-zip big W.

In other results from around the league Police United sunk San Pedro Sea Dogs 3-1, San Felipe Barcelona and Placencia settled for a 2 all stalemate, Juventus picked up its 2nd win in 2 weeks edging San Ignacio United 2 to 1, Verdes held the Belize Defense Force to a scoreless draw and FC Belize rolled over RG City Boys 3 to 1. Looking to week 7 Paradise Freedom Fighters will host san Pedro, Belmopan visits Verdes, Police will get a visit from FC Belize, FC Barcelona travels to San Ignacio, Placencia gets a visit from the BDF and RG City Boys will host Juventus at the MCC.

In other football news weekend results from the Smart Mundialito shows that Brown Bombers blanked Ladyville Jaguars 2-zip, Hattieville and Unity rangers battled to a scoreless draw.  Ladyville Japan edged City Boys to 1-nil, Jane Usher and 3rd world fought to a nil-nil score and so did Young Stars and St. John’s Vianney.

Turning to the softball scene, the 5th Annual Charles Solis Memorial Tournament stages yesterday at Rogers Stadium saw Easy Does It of Flowers Bank into the finals against Telemedia of Belize City. In the opening inning Margaret Hendy displayed dominance over the Telemedia bats getting out unscathed as Sharra Robinson throws out Christina Jacobs at 1st base. Her counterpart Mary Flowers also gets out the 1st inning without conceding a run as she fields Kelsey Robinson’s swing to throw her out at 1st. However in the 3rd Hendy runs into trouble when facing Lydia Cacho as she comes up with an errant pitch that brings Martha Rhys home. Cacho then punches this pitch past the infield to bring home Earlene Belisle. Big hitter Nerecia Frazier comes up and powers this swing at Sharra Robinson who should have picked it up and then compounds the situation with a bad throw to 2nd that allows Lydia Cacho to score from 1st. In the 4th inning Martha Rhys hits this pitch to Sharra Robinson who makes wild throw to 1st base putting more pressure on the pitcher. Earlene Baptist steps up and smashes this ball to the outfield Christine Jacobs and Martha Rhys brings in 2 more runs.  Telemedia would score another to make it a 3 run inning as they go on to win an 11-2 blow out to claim the Charles Solis title.  We say congratulation to Mary Flowers and Telemedia.

In table tennis news, Team Play in the 2012 Brother’s Habet Team League yesterday saw Team Cruz beat Racquetters 5-4, Hurricane got past Welders 5-2, Welders rebounded to beat Racquetters 5-3 and Team Garage stopped Hurricane 5-3, all in 1st Division play. In 2nd division play, Tallawah beats Phoenix 5-1, Racquetters defeated Turds 5-zip, Mismark beat SJC Young Warriors by the same score, Garage halted to BDF 5-2, Ping Pong pummeled SJC Snipers  5 to 1, SJC Lightspeed get over SJC Strikes 5-zip, Tallawah beat Racquetters by that same score and Phoenix edged SJC Warriors 5-4.

Checking in on the Inter-Office Basketball League over the weekend, Central Bank jolted BEL 44-27, Belize Water Service handled Smart 47 to 41, Belize Bank burned Bowen & Bowen 66-65 and Truckers roller over Cellular World 95-80.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
