Separate weekend accidents leave 2 dead

The spate of traffic accidents continued over the weekend as incidents in the north and south of the country have claimed two more lives. According to police around nine on Friday night, a head-on collision between miles fifty-eight and fifty-nine involving a tow head truck and trailer and a small brown car produced fatal results. When investigators arrived at the scene, they found the driver of the car, sixty-one year old Benigno Chable dead behind the wheel. The other driver, Carlos Martinez of Benque Viejo, fled the scene. He turned himself into Orange Walk police this morning in the company of his attorney. Police say Martinez will be charged with a list of offences including manslaughter, causing death by careless conduct, and failure to stop and render assistance.

Twenty-four hours later, Independence police were investigating another fatal traffic accident that occurred on the Southern Highway. Food vendor Juan Choco was found dead behind the wheel of his grey Mazda pickup truck around eleven on Saturday night. Preliminary findings reveal that the victim was heading to his home in Mango Creek, but between miles forty-nine and fifty Choco lost control of the vehicle and it overturned several times. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt and tonight it is believed that the critically wounded man bled to death. Authorities strongly suspect that alcohol may have played a role in both accidents.
