60 scholarships courtesy of Restore Belize and B.N.E.

But there’s some good news; sixty students are getting a shot at a secondary education through a partnership of Restore Belize and the B.N.E. Charitable Trust.  The students will be a part of the “I am Belize” Scholarship Program and by extension will get internship and mentorship opportunities. Last week, B.N.E. Trust handed over a four hundred thousand dollar cheque for investment in the students’ education, beginning this academic year.

“We thought that this, a partnership, with the Restore Belize Program would be a strategic way to support and invest in education in the country. So we decided to essentially adopt the sixty students that were at the time in July enrolled in the I am Belize Scholarship Program. Our specific commitment were in the form of supporting specifically the cost of tuition, books, uniforms and supporting tutoring opportunities for the students and facilitating mentorship and internship for these students; so our goal is to make sure that these sixty kids graduate from high school. There are features of the partnership that definitely requires the commitment from the students. So, for example, in order for the students to stay on the scholarship and maintain it, they must pass and move on to the next form. They are also required to open and maintain a savings account at one of the local financial institutions and we thought that that would help them in some way to start sixth form. They must also enroll in the scholarship club; there’s a scholarship club that Restore Belize Program started when it opened two years ago; so we thought that would be an excellent opportunity for them to be exposed to life skills.”
