Explosion at Western Gas on the Highway

After five o’clock this evening, there was a huge explosion captured in the amateur video at a gas depot near Bravo Motors on the Western Highway. The recently opened depot is also a distribution center. A News Five team was on the scene and firemen are still attempting to out the blaze at Western Gas Company. Bravo Motors and residents quickly evacuated the area of what could have turned out to be a dangerous situation. Reports are that the fire started from a tanker. The team is now back from the scene of the fire. The explosion on the compound that involved a stationary gas tank destroyed all three of the small depot’s tanks. Assistant Fire Chief, Ted Smith, tells us more.

“Well we had an explosion in the pumping houses for Western Gas Company here; approximately three miles on the Western Highway. They were transferring gas from one tank to the stationery tank from one of the bulk trucks—one of the ten thousand gallons trucks. There were three ten thousand gallons trucks on the compound filled and they were transferring gas to the stationery tank. During the transfer, an explosion occurred in the pump housing and set off a fire.”

“Has it been established, what triggered that explosion; what exactly caused it?”

Ted Smith

“No; that has not been established at this time. In fact, the investigation has not even started. We still have leak there going on. We are hoping to get the gas transferred. It is a small leak that we still have and we are unable to plug that leak at this time. We are hoping that the company can assist in transferring the gas from one tank to the next.”

We’ll have a more detailed report on Friday.

  1. Storm says:

Does GOB have ANYBODY actually employed to inspect fuel facilities for safety, and standard minimum safety regulations?

The issue of safety is always important concerning storage of such flammable material. There is always the potential for people to die when safety standards are not maintained. It is even more so with GOB granting offshore drilling licenses, where a mistake will devastate our cays and beaches and marine environment — that is, all the things that attract tourists to the Jewel.

I hope there is a full and competent investigation of this incident, and a public report.

Storm I bet the answer to your question is NO! Perhaps the guy pumping the gas was smoking but Mr. Smith is “hoping that the company will assist”. He will not make them take care of the problem he is hoping that they will. This is almost a joke!

The government needs to stop all that political jibber-jabber and start dealing with public safety issues. A gas bulk storage should never be allowed so close to other businesses and the general population!
