Jaw-dropping sports update with James Adderley

James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this edition of Sports Monday.

The Casa’s Cycling Organization presented a massive 38 mile race on Saturday that ran 5 laps around the Willows Bank Road cut-off/Landing Bridge Circuit which attracted 34 of the best in the business. As they take off we know this one will be a monster. At the 1st turn around point, it’s Byron Pope and Gregg Lovell in commend of the pace. Today it appears Lovell of C4 and Byron Pope of Benny’s have something to settle as they continue to lead the race going into the 3rd lap. We join the lead duo as they make their final turn at Landing Bridge and it’s been a wire to wire lead that has given each rider 5 station prizes apiece. Of course there’s always a chase group and this 6 man unit finds Brandon Cattouse pushing the pace along with Liam Stewart, Joel Borland, Ron McKenzie, Robert Cassasola and young Giovanni Lovell who finished 2nd last week.

It’s money time, Liam Stewart of M&M breaks out of the chase group to finish uncontested for 3rd place with his time of 1hr. 36 mins.10 secs. Brandon Cattouse takes 4th, Ron McKenzie 5th while young Giovanni Lovell, who finished 2nd last week, rolls in for 6th place.  Giovanni Lovell also emerged as the 1st junior rider today and Liam Stewart also took the Master Class.

In other cycling news, Kulture Tours presented a weekend warriors race for A, B and C riders this Sunday, August 26th that will travel from Leslie’s Imports to Crooked Tree junction and then swings back to finish at Gerald Garbutt’s Farm.

In basketball news, Tuff E Nuff brought out the stops in Game 5 of the Interoffice 5 game championship series to knock off Ministry of Education/Alamilla’s 59 to 45 Friday night at Big Bird’s Isle and we say congratulations to the 2012 Champions Tuff E Nuff.

Turning to the softball scene, the Belize Rural Female Finals saw Sandhill Unstoppable and Easy Does It of Flowers Bank faceoff for all the marbles at Lord’s Bank yesterday. Easy Does It gets on the scoreboard in the 1st inning when 2nd baseman, Cathleen Rhaburn lays down this buny; she beats the high throw which allows Amber Waite to score from 3rd base. Make it 2-nil when Sharra Robinson reaches 1st on an errant throw and Cathleen Rhaburn scores. Sandhill replies in the bottom of the 1st when Marion Dawson is thrown out at 1st base by the pitcher Margaret Hendy but it allows Shadine Westby to score. We’re at 2in the 2nd when Dian Baldwin hits the pitcher Westby for double; that brings home 2 runs. Baldwin would reach 2nd base at Kelsey Robinson would bring in the 3rd run of the inning.

This long fly from Aima Gillett is caught by the Sandhill centerfielder but Sharra Robinson beats the throw home as they strike for 5 runs in the 2nd. In the 3rd inning, Sandhill stages a comeback—catcher Gale Vacarro makes a bad throw that allows Francine Robinson to bring in a run. Charlee Canton comes up with this hit that brings another run. Sandhill would score 4 runs in this inning to make it a 1 run game. However, in the 6th inning, Flowers Bank’s Easy Does It explodes for another 5 runs as they go on to post the 14-7 win. Margaret Hendy wins, Shadine Westby looses and Easy Does It is champion of Belize Rural in 2012. Congratulations from the sports desk. Easy Does It will now represent Belize Rural in the 2012 National Women Softball Competition which kicks off this Friday, August 24th inside Roger’s Stadium here in Belize City. Edison Parks has been selected as Tournament Director so stay tuned.

On the volleyball scene, we say kudos to the Belize Senior Women’s Volleyball Team which won bronze at the World Championship Qualification Tournament staged at Panama City over the weekend.

In football news, the Premier League of Belize opens the 2012-2013 Season this weekend of August 25th and 26th featuring 2 zones of 6 teams apiece. So get ready for prime time football. In news from the Stann Creek Valley, Competition over the weekend, XY2 beat Valley Shatters 6-3 while Santa Martha got over Valley Stars in a 6-2 final score. Looking to the weekend finds Alta Vista facing Real Juventus and Valley Pride goes to work against Santa Martha.  In the meanwhile, play in the San Jose Succotz Cup over the weekend saw Eagles United beat Alfa FC 3-1, Arenal edged Royal strikers 3-2, 1RKA and Arenal settled for a 3-3 stalemate and Succotz II burned Succotz FC 4-3.

Finally folks, Hattieville United Porting Club announces that the King of the Park Summer Basketball Tournament resumes on Saturday, August 25th inside Hattieville. All teams must contact Mister Garbutt at telephone number 669-4330 to confirm their standings.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
