Scholarships awarded to students

Corporate responsibility and sponsorship is normally heralded this time of year. Recently the Belize Bank gave twenty-five high school scholarships along with a promise of mentorship by the bank employees to students in each district. This afternoon Telemedia continued with its scholarship program which started way back in 1991.

Thirty primary and secondary school students from across the country were recipients of B.T.L.’s Annual Scholarship Awards.  The ceremony, held at the Radisson, commemorated twenty-one years since the initiative began.  Since then the program has expanded considerably to meet the growing demands of education at the secondary and tertiary levels.  The financial assistance granted to each student covers all four years of high school.

“I feel very happy that I was a recipient of the B.T.L. Scholarship and I feel relieved that my parents won’t be in [that] many expenses through high school.  So I’m very happy receiving a scholarship from B.T.L. and I am glad that B.T.L. is ready to support me.”

The Annual Scholarship Award Ceremony has become a crucial aspect of B.T.L.’s corporate citizenship, contributing to the academic development of over five hundred students since it got started in 1991.

“It started out only with the school books but as you went on you realized that the need was greater, that the children, half of them came from one parent families and they needed support, they needed nurturing, they need mentoring, they needed somebody to help them with their assignments or else they would not be successful.  And so the program actually grew to encompass a lot more and so we got our staff involved.  And it’s amazing that you have staff who want to give back but they’re not able, they don’t have finances to be able to do that but through their knowledge, the discipline that they’ve gained over years, they can actually talk to these young people and help to grow and develop them.”

The successes shared in academic achievement, as well as securing the coveted scholarships aren’t lost on the parents, a majority of whom were present to lend their children moral support.

“Well that feeling I must say, Isani, is a very ecstatic one.  It brings a feeling of excitement, joy and also relief because if I hadn’t gotten this aid from the B.T.L. Scholarship Program then that would have meant that I would have had to fit all expenses out of pocket on top of my two additional children that I have to take care of.  So I’m grateful for the help and I appreciate it a whole lot.”

“Seeing your daughter perform well through primary school, what is that feeling like as one of her motivators, to try to get her to continue on the path of excelling academically?”

George Davis Sr.

“Well I must say that she makes me very, very proud, alright.  She makes me feel good as a parent to know that what I am doing is paying off and helping her to become a better person in the future.  This scholarship only adds to what she can become because with the help from B.T.L. she can go much farther because of the additional tutoring that this program will be offering to her.”

All applications were screened by an internal committee made up of B.T.L. employees who were also acknowledged this afternoon by the company’s management.

So how come, black cruffy kids never get to earn these scholarships?

  3. Alex says:

Heard on Love News 1 of the kids say that he is happy that he received a scholarship because his parents struggled to put him through “Hummingbird Elementary” and apparently he went or is hoping to go to “Belize High School”. Now I’m sure I’m not the only finding a problem with this. Aren’t those 2 schools private and very expensive. Yeah I figured…say what you want but there is a saying which many people can abide by “live within your means” and that does not mean that you’ll cheat yourself out of a good education. Everything seems wrong with our system.
