B.T.B. launching new initiatives to improve tourism

Laura Esquivel-Frampton

The recent figures issued by the Belize Tourism Board on visitor arrivals to the Jewel are promising. With an overall increase of nine percent in arrivals in the first half of the year and the month of July already showing an estimated seventeen percent increase at the PGIA alone, the BTB machinery is in full swing. But to ensure that the number of visitors is maintained and continue to grow, Acting Director of Tourism, Laura Esquivel-Frampton told News Five that there are several new projects in the pipeline, one of which will be officially announced to the public next week.

“We just got back from meeting the cruise lines; that’s as far as the cruise sector goes. We are also putting together a cruise port prospectus to try and encourage more cruise lines to come here. In addition to that we are meeting very regularly through our airlines development committee with the airlines that are already coming here and our airlines development committee is also meeting with some new airlines to come in. We also have some fantastic things that we are going to be a part of marketing wise. We’re going to do an official announcement next week of an agreement with which mainly focuses on persons looking for bridal information, wedding information, destination weddings, and honeymoons. We are also going to be taking place in a global bazaar which is done by travel and leisure magazine which has a very wide readership. So we are going to be out there. We are going to continue working with our travel agents and our wholesalers on our road shows; knocking on doors; getting Belize’s name out there and encouraging people to come.”

BTB should compare our port objectively with the competition in the Caribbean. Sadly, we are very near the bottom of the ladder in terms of security, aesthetic appeal, and tourist attractions and amenities. To compete we need serious investment in all of those areas, and I think the entire port management has to be turned upside-down to accomplish that.
