House fell on boy, but bills also weighing family down

Brighton Cordova

While the bond is a billion dollar issue, a local family is facing financial difficulty of their own. And while it won’t cost anywhere near the Superbond, raising a few dollars more is a matter of life and death for their child. Ten year old Brithon Cordova remains hospitalized since his house in Orange Walk collapsed on him and his nephew, seven year old Jovuan Griffiths. Brithon suffered brain damage and in an update today, his mother told News Five that he appears to have amnesia. According to Norma Cordova, her son underwent surgery earlier this week and his condition is slowly improving. But Norma and her family are struggling with the medical expenses and are seeking financial assistance. She came to News Five today to make a personal plea to the public.

“His body is okay and his organs are okay, but the problem is his brain. They say that—right now this morning they say that they will give him some medication to help to see if he can try to remember because he is not remembering anything right now. He is not moving yet, he hears and he sees but the only problem is the brain and the brain controls your body. So I just di appeal to di people, to society out there if they can help in donating whatever they can donate for expenses, especially the expenses at the hospital, you know the scans and whatever they are taking for Brithon. I am appealing to the public if they can help. A dollar will be good for me, it will in anyway. I thank all the persons who are praying, sending out their prayers for Brithon and for my family. You know it’s very hard for me and we are planning to see if he is qualified to go out to seek further help. So we will see how that works out.”

“Do they know yet the extent of the damage to his brain of if he’ll need surgery or anything?”

“He done do a surgery about three days ago. They put in a tube in his throat to help him breathe because he cannot breathe and they put in a tube in his stomach to feed him. So It’s a lot of pain that I’m going through to see Brithon lying there and I’m just appealing to the public, please just a dollar.”

“How can people get in contact with you if they want to help?”

Norma Cordova

“I have a bank number that you can put into Heritage Bank #5211181, that’s the bank number. And my phone number, you can get me at 624-9099 or 636-4078.”

Jovuan Griffiths, who was with Brithon under the house when it fell, received minor injuries to his legs.

  1. Storm says:

Let’s pray for the child’s recovery.

Not to pile on the family, but it would have been less costly in every way to have repaired the house supports before it fell, instead of trying to repair the youngster now. It’s a lesson for the rest of us, purchased at a terrible price by Brithon.
