But what caused decline in cruise tourism?

But there was some bad news. The figures for cruise ship arrivals were down by six percent, just about sixty thousand less visitors. Esquivel-Frampton says the shortfall is attributed to the increase in overnight stays and that plans are in place to boost the figures.

Laura Esquivel-Frampton

“We’re attributing it mainly to the conversion. We believe that a lot of it is conversion from cruise to overnight. Many of our properties are quite amaze to say that they actually have some people who say, “Yeah I came on a cruise, stopped over and decided to come as an overnight guess.”

There are also many other factors when it comes to cruise calls; some of it having to do with the chartering of ships where some organizations—like for example there is Blues Bands and Blues Crews kind of thing and they would dictate the part of the cruise  ship and so that also helps with those numbers. We actually just came back from meeting with all the crew’s lines—myself and the chairman met with them on Tuesday in Miami and they said yes they understand that our numbers are a little down this year, but they have good news for us. They say that the numbers are way up for us next year so we can expect an increase in arrivals again next year for cruise ships.  We already know that there are some cruise lines that had stop coming to Belize that has starting to come again. For example, Princess Cruise Lines has started to come back to Belize again—they haven’t been here for a few years and they are looking to continue that into next year. And we continue to work with their cruise lines; trying to get them to bring more ships to Belize while we ensure though that our country is able to accommodate all these guests.”

  1. Storm says:

Objectively, the port of Belize is far below the standard of the other cruise ports in the Caribbean in terms of safety, visual appeal, and tourist amenities and attractions. The permanent financial chaos there won’t help increase cruise tourism because it prevents necessary upgrades.
