Tourism to Belize on the rise; by 9%

While the economic impact of Ernesto is being measured, tourism figures are looking up. That’s because the overall growth shows a thirteen point eight percent increase in overall arrivals through the first half of 2012. In the Belize Tourism Board’s second quarter report, the figures show a whopping nine percent increase in overnight arrivals in comparison to 2011.  Some five thousand seven hundred and ninety one tourists stayed in the country overnight during the second quarter. The arrivals in March were historic as the numbers exceeded the thirty-two thousand mark for the first time. The month of June had over twenty-four thousand visitors, trumping last year’s figure of a little over twenty-one thousand. The numbers also grew for airport arrivals, which saw a thirteen point eight increase during the first half of this year. And just as impressive are the cruise arrivals; January alone raked in over eighty-six thousand cruise visitors. The BTB says that the number of weekly cruise ships stopping in Belize is down from seven to one. And with the passage of Hurricane Ernesto, the one ship that was scheduled for this week didn’t stop in; the next one arriving in Belize is set for Tuesday.
