Medical student charged for manslaughter of classmate

A twenty-one year old medical student was killed in a traffic accident in Santa Clara, Corozal on Saturday and the driver now faces several charges. Jayandra Jahhar was one of three Indian nationals, who were travelling from Orange Walk to Corozal in an Isuzu rodeo, driven by nineteen year old Prandeep Kumar Saikai while Sagar Sharma, was in the back seat. Saikai reportedly lost control of the vehicle between miles seventy and seventy-one; it flipped several times and landed in a cane field off the road. Police have since arrested and charged Saikai with Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct, Drove Motor Vehicle with Alcohol Concentration above the Prescribed Limit and Drove Motor Vehicle without Due Care and Attention.

  1. Seletar says:

I hope the negligence of the deceased student will be a defense or at least mitigation — it’s been reported the victim was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected. With a seatbelt on, probably no death, and no manslaughter charge against the driver. At what point are we responsible for looking after our own safety?
