Opposition Leader blasts Lands Department for alleged nepotism

Francis Fonseca

Also taking the podium at Independence Hall, was Opposition Leader Francis Fonseca, who condemned the blatant nepotism which he alleges is taking place at the Ministry of Natural Resources.  Fonseca charged that the entire Lands Department is littered with family and friends of Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega who have been appointed to key positions within the ministry.

Francis Fonseca, Leader of the Opposition

“You have family members of the Minister of Natural Resources, the deputy prime minister of this country, who are in key positions at the Ministry of Natural Resources, several key positions.  And so, what is taking place, in our view, at the Ministry of Natural Resources over the past four years, four plus years, and it’s ongoing and continuing is that there’s been almost a complete decimation of the public service at the Ministry of Natural Resources, replaced by these friends and families, family members of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Minister of Lands and the deputy prime minister and that must be of great concern to us.  And that is the type of thing that leads to what we are exposing today, when you have family members controlling the ministry in key positions then that leads inevitably to the kind of corruption that we are exposing today. This is just the tip of the iceberg.  We have a lot more information, a lot more to share with the Belizean people but we want to do a thorough analysis of the documents before we share them publicly.”

Senator Collet Montejo also called into question allegations concerning land acquisition by the family of Minister Rene Montero.

The problem with all of this is that this has not only been occurring under the various administrations of the UDP, including the present administration; but also under the various administrations of the PUP as well. Thus, my question is: what would the PUP do different if they manage to get into office the next time? Are they going to go back to similar behaviour, or are they actually going to live up to their words?

I’m happy this issue of the total inadequacy of our land title office to protect rights has come to the forefront of public debate. Everyone in the Jewel knows the Lands Office is a corrupt joke, and has been so no matter which party is in power.

I think THE NATION deserves to have a credible title system designed and put in place, even if big favorite toes are stepped on. Every other country seems to be able to do that, but no leader here has the will because they all want the ability to steal from one and give to their select favorites and family.

Belize deserves an honest system administered by honest PUBLIC SERVANTS.

My fellow Belizeans, we have to enshrine in our Belize Constitution that corruption in government will not be allowed in the government. It must be justified by stating that Corruption destroys our democracy; it destroys fragile economic system because it gives away hundreds of millions of tax dollars to political families and cronies; and creates a narrow band of illegal money people who don’t re-invest any of their illegal money resulting in no money for investment and excessive poverty and unemployment. Corruption also feeds the Hattieville Penal colony because the government pays lots of money to incarcerate everyone for crimes, made up crimes ,to fatten the fat cats of the penal system. Our judicial system is corrupt because it feeds this system. So there is no way out. Everything is criminalized. If one doesn’t have insurance, one goes to jail; if one can’t pay a fine one goes to jail; if one brings more than $10,000 into country , one goes to jail. Who pays for all this? the taxpayers. Who become rich? those who run Hattieville. It would be interesting to see how and to whom the splitting of the profits go to. And this is just one example. I will have a complete dossier of all the corruption in lands and customs departments. Petillo of BIGYA watch out. It is coming. CORRUPTION must be ended one way or another.

The interview with Minister Vega is very upsetting! He is arrogant and blatantly rude especially to the hard working tax payers who cannot get a little piece of land. Very disappointed in the current administration. I agree with Vuk and Storm …I call on the PUP to propose a better system and all the lands given out to friends and family should be thoroughly investigated.
