Crimestoppers partners with Central Assembly of God for Summer Camp

Not far away, over two hundred children have been attending the Central Assembly of God’s summer camp. The students were engaged in the creative and performing arts for the past three days under a partnership with Crimestoppers Belize and members of Orchard Assembly. Organizer, Phillipa Herrera says that this year’s camp seeks to bridge social gaps and instill faith in the young students.

“This is one of our responses to the many different criminal activities. We know that the kids would’ve been out during this summer and so the Assemblies of God Churches go together and we communicated with ITVET, the UB to ask them to assist us in for the space for this amount of children. Every day, we started on Monday and we will be ending on Friday. We have an average of two hundred and fifty two kids every day. The aim is to get the kids off the streets and it’s not only for a particular set of children. We are looking at building relationship between the children from the North side and south side because once these kids become friends they would be able to respond better to the feelings of unloved that they feel between each other who are asking; they are encouraged to fight instead of to love each other and so through our church we have responded to the call. We have taught music, dance, arts and craft, Bible and drama and soccer. The kids have participated over a four hour period with a ten minute break in between. They have participated in each of these activities; you’ve heard them, they are having much fun; they are screaming; every day our number grows. This year’s theme is entitled anything is possible with God and that is what we want them to believe; anything they set their mind to, educationally, you can be anybody if you put your mind to it, because it is possible if you believe.”

Both camps end on Friday.

Sounds like a great programme with great objectives. It’s good to instill in youngsters respect for law and the idea that the community needs to organise to protect itself from the criminals within it. And that northside, southside, east and west, we are all God’s children and brothers and sisters to each other, instead of natural-born enemies that gang leaders profit from.
