Police Association negotiating hasty transfers

Eldon Arzu

At the end of June, a number of police officers got notice of their sudden transfer to take effect in two weeks. Some of the officers were to relocate to their new posts today, but that has been put on hold after the Police Association spoke out last Friday against the undue haste in which the officers, many with families were being uprooted. The association turned the tables on the department and set today as the deadline for their concerns to be addressed. According to the Association President, Corporal Eldon Arzu, a meeting with the top brass of the Police Department was to take place today in Belmopan, but after a long wait, that meeting was cancelled. Arzu says, however, that they are still optimistic that the Police Department is willing to work with them and the association is now in the process of collecting letters from its membership requesting that the transfers be deferred. Those letters will be submitted to the Commissioner of Police on Tuesday and we’ll follow up with Arzu on the outcome.

So, what happened to the deadline of today that was not met?

Disputes and ultimata among our security forces must undermine public confidence and respect for them.

Please officers, just work the problem out privately between the enlisted men and leadership, without deadlines, press releases, or anything like that. It’s unprofessional.
