Schoolyard Budget Debate: On Day 2, Julius calls Santi names

Santino Castillo

Day two of the annual budget debate continued today inside the House of Representatives, where members from both sides of the floor scrutinized the fiscal budget for 2012-2013.  By far, the most engaging exchange took place this afternoon between Caribbean Shores Area Representative, Santino Castillo and the member for Cayo South, Julius Espat.  Espat, in his lengthy presentation, commented on the achievements of the People’s United Party during its ten-year term in office; while Castillo castigated the Opposition for orchestrating the hefty super bond. Castillo charged that the Peoples United Party has conveniently forgotten about the malfeasances which led to the immense foreign debt that the country subsequently incurred.  The accusation ultimately led to a brief verbal brawl by both newcomers, prompting Speaker of the House Michael Peyrefitte to issue a warning to Espat.

Santino Castillo, Minister of State, Ministry of Finance

“Mr. Speaker while we can perhaps forgive the honorable member for [Cayo South] for his embarrassing disease we cannot allow ourselves to become infected with that disease.  We must vaccinate ourselves with the most powerful medicine known to man.”

Michael Peyrefitte, Speaker of the House

“Member for Cayo South.”

Julius Espat, Area Representative, Cayo South

“I don’t accept those insults because we could start call ahn Suavecito right now if ih wahn start.”

“Mr. Speaker, I just want to make it clear [that] this is not KTV Latino.  You’re serving the country of Belize.”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Member for Cayo South let me [remind you.]  When I went through these standing orders I said to myself [that] under no circumstance it would be the last resort for me to name a member of this House but if you continue member I will name you.  You are being very disrespectful to the House.  Members of the gallery, the member for Cayo South has the mike.  Yes member.”

Julius Espat

“I have one question Mr. Speaker.”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Yes member.”

Julius Espat

“Why is he insulting us on this side and it’s being accepted?”

Michael Peyrefitte

“Member for Cayo South, I have to make a balance here.  Nobody was more insulting than you, you know.  Nobody was more insulting than you, so if I allowed you to get away with your few jabs here and there, you have to take some jabs too.  It’s only natural.”

Julius Espat

“I accept, Mr. Speaker.”

    Colourful, maybe. Disgraceful, absolutely!

We are led by fools playing at being men.

The Jewel has serious problems — I want leaders clever enough to identify and solve them, not clever enough to hold their own in a second form insult match.

  2. Lucas says:

Talking about Super-bond; now it is Humongus bond with courtesy from Barrow with this Fortis and BTL thing.

  3. Simone says:

The Speaker has to be more forceful to control the namecalling and theatrics.

  4. King Dean says:

I guess all the so-called politicians need to make it entertaining to the viewers and as a result they engage in these kinds of dialogues. It’s a pity we are governed by these people. So sad for my country.

  5. Uncle Benji says:

Storm you have a serious problem. You are a “wanabe”. America has made your brain sappy. Julius Espat was correct in attacking Barrow and his minions.

Give Espat two years and he will be a political force to be reckon with. Quit trying to be a scholar Storm. Try the word “dunce”. You are so easily manipulated.

Now if you a true Belizean, you will not respond to my observations of you with an attack. You will make an effort to quit all your boring posts and comments. Belizean love!

  6. Belizean says:

I THOUGHT JULIUS WOULDNT EVER BE SO DISRESPECTFUL!!! MAN, let him leave. I am ashamed of the PUP people man

    Well, I’ll be damned.
At least the Belizean politicians are consistent in their ignorance, and stupidity.

    The Jefferson’s?

This debate has everything you’d expect from a bunch of idiot posing as leaders. Clearly their moral standards are text-bound.

Stop the insults, name calling and regurgitation and start working together to produce a better Belize for everyone.

  8. Rod says:

Belizean you are the only one belizeans should be ashamed of .

  9. belizebeauty says:

This is the tea that the Honorable Prime Minister Barrow brewed when he was so disrespecful, rude and nasty to Mr Musa. Now drink up. The arrogant Mr Barrow, the Prime Minister himself, set the precedence for what we are seeing today.

  10. Belizean Pride says:

this debate was more like a reality show watching the jersey shores having snooki doing her trantum and the rest joining her, isn’t it embarrassing to see how this politicians act in the house, the same people that are leading our Jewel? mein it’s really embarrassing but really both sides act immature and they need to grow up to a level of well educated people. to a low class Belizean watching this is crazy how this fool insult themselves like kids across the street. Imagine how the world outside look at our leaders.

  11. Belizean says:

SO ROD, you condone disrespect, even among politicians? You should hear yourself, i think you would be ashamed to even be on this message board

  12. AnnonBelizean says:

Man Belizean, Rod is a political jack-ass, all his posts are always PRO PUP, Anti Government. I am beginning to believe that he is “First Belizean” that would have been awarded financial gains if the PUP had won the last election.
