Economics Minister of National Security? Saldivar forgets crime

Said Musa

Minister of National Security John Saldivar, addressed the House following the Leader of the Opposition’s presentation. However, he did not mention the cost of anti-crime measures and the financial resources that government has set aside for national security despite an increase of about a million dollars. As it stands, there have been seventy-five homicides since the beginning of the year, an exceptionally high number that continues to spike. On July fourth, Saldivar him-self, was reported in the media as sitting in a barber chair of Buck’s Barber Shop in South Creek when a gunman blasted several shots at Tyrone Fitzgibbon during a robbery attempt in front of the barbershop. Saldivar learned that life is real and left immediately. And though he did not address crime, Saldivar spoke at length on the economic benefits of the 2012-2013 budget.  And in his presentation, former prime minister and current Area Representative for Fort George, Said Musa, singled out Saldivar for his incompetence and failure to address the malignant issue.

Said Musa, P.U.P. Area Representative, Fort George

“I find it amazing that in the light of the very serious crime situation that this country faces that the Minister of National Security spoke for almost an hour, but not a word about the crime situation and what they are going to do about it. This is the minister responsible for the police and the B.D.F. and indeed for all matters related to fighting crime and the whole security of our country. But all he can talk about is trying to show that the Honorable Leader of the Opposition when he was referring to the investments that were taking place in other countries; he, the member for Belmopan, confused that with taking about the G.D.P. growth rate in those countries. What the Honorable Leader of the Opposition was pointing out is the substantial investments taking place in all these countries including Panama and then compared that to the thirteen million dollars that we have been getting investments according to the last report. The second point Mister Speaker that I would like to refer to is the Honorable Prime Minister challenged the Leader of the Opposition about a statement he made in which the Leader of the Opposition pointed out that the Prime Minister himself was admitting that his government was accused of being incompetent.”

I had high hopes for Hon.Saldivar when he was appointed. But he has disappointed me. So far his performance is mixed at best. The most objective and important scorecard is the murder rate, and on that point he is failing.

I would have preferred him to spend an hour personally patrolling the mean streets of the City instead of jawboning for the same hour. It would have been more useful.

John Saldivar is a joke of a Security Minister. Instead of reaching out to the at risk youths, he ran away when he heard shots fired, along with his Police guard and Joe! What a damn joke! Did you expect better from people who bought their way into government, opportunistics, but then again, thats UDP!
