What is the budget for teachers?

Dean Barrow

Crimes such as murders and robberies should soon be easier to investigate as in the 2012/2013 budget; the Ministry of National Security received an additional nine hundred thousand dollars to improve its capabilities. You have heard by now that the IT-VET is suffering from low enrollment hence a smaller share in the education portion of the budget. But what about the increments and salary increases that the country’s teachers are expecting? Prime Minister Dean Barrow explains his take on the issue that the Belize National Teachers Union has been waiting on for months.

Jose Sanchez

“Early on in the speech, you cited that there wouldn’t have been an increase in salaries, but later on you said three million dollars in increases due to salaries and wages due to the good public servants.”

Dean Barrow

“The increments. In other words, there is not a salary increase properly so called, but that’s my point. I just finished talking to Miss Marisol about that. She said well the unions say they want an increase. Well the fact is that there is an increase—not designated as a salary increase; but those increments cost us something like ten million dollars a year. And I made the point that the increments represents for the middle and lower ranks of public service; a three percent annual increase—for the higher ranks, a two percent. Inflation has been considerably less than that three percent over the past three years. So in real terms, in practical terms, it is an increase. But I can’t say that in addition to that, the government can fund a properly so called salary, a raise of pay, properly so called.”

Good teachers deserve good salary. The teachers are the ” other ” parents of children at school. Put yourself in a teachers shoe for one day. Every day they go true hell. First, looking at kids with abuse family, kids that are hungry fanting at every assembly. Triying to think how to get things for the classrooms like chalk, paper, e.t.c. Sometimes getting shit from parents. But nothing beats the $#!% they get from the goverment. My respect to all good teachers all over the world.

  3. Louis says:

Barrow would rather increase the budget for his cronies at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs than raise pay for teachers. Belizeans are no fools.

UDP Leaders: you need to change PM. You owe it to Belize.

A NO vote on Barrow’s budget is a must.

I agree that good teachers deserve good salaries. At the same time, the whole world economy is down, and we all must tighten our belts to get to the end of this long recession.

Education is one of the few things I think government should be spending money on, because the children are the future of the Jewel. Bad education, bad future; good education, good future.

There are good teachers and bad teachers. I agree that our children’s teachers deserve more pay. However, when you choose your profession, you also choose what your salary will be and can be.

I would suggest to many of the teachers, that I know, and who have taught my children, please learn to speak English.
