Accident on highway claims life of Orange Walk resident

Fitzroy Yearwood

An Orange Walk resident lost her life over the weekend. Fifty six year old Isabel Carballo lived on San Pablo Street in Orange Walk Town. However, she was walking on mile fifty on the Northern Highway when she was knocked down by a vehicle. The particulars of the vehicle are unknown as the driver never stopped to render her any aid. At eight twenty five p.m. on July first, Orange Walk Police found Carballo’s body on the highway with head and body injuries.  She was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. According to the police press officer, the department is seeking out anyone who can provide clues to the identity of the reckless driver.

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“We had a fatal traffic accident reported in Orange Walk. This was on the first of July about eight-twenty-five p.m. Orange Walk police responded to a scene between miles fifty and fifty-one where they saw the lifeless body of Isabel Carballo, fifty-six year old laborer of San Pablo Street, Orange Walk. She was seen on the left side of the highway with head and body injuries. Initial investigations reveal that Carballo was walking on the left side of the highway traveling towards Belize City when she was hit by a motor vehicle coming from the same direction. The body was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital. Apparently this is a “Hit and Run Accident” because we cannot say what type of vehicle hit her.”

Hit and run death is little better than murder — we need life sentences for people who do this. The danger they create is greater than any possible benefit they might contribute to the Jewel.

And we need investigators trained to track these criminals — surely there is massive new damage to some vehicle here, and some neighbours of the criminal will notice it. I hope for the sake of justice they report it to police.

I was so upset at the hit and run killer, I forgot to pay respect to the victim and condolences to the family. My prayers for her soul and sympathy for the family’s terrible loss.

If the driver, or any of his friends, family, or neighbours, has a conscience, I hope they will tell the police who did it so the Jewel can have justice.
