Celebrations Calendar unveiled

Shari Williams

Carnival is two months away and the mas camps are beginning their preparation at their regular bases of operation. But there are several activities that are prominent in the month of September. Earlier today the calendar of events for was launched at the House of Culture.

Shari Williams, Communication Officer, NICH

“Of course, this year, on the September Celebrations, we have some of the big events that everybody looks forward to every year. For example, we have the carnival road march, we have the queen of the bay, we have the tenth day celebrations and bram, we have the twenty-first official celebrations, twentieth night fireworks, pan yaad and the list goes on and on and on. But this year, we’re having some added attractions to the calendar. For example, on the second [September], we’re having the official opening on St. George’s Caye. After the ceremonies there’s going to be a battle regatta. So we’re inviting people to come out. It’s being put together by the sailing association. On the nineteenth of September, we’re having a national service day. This is a day to honor our national heroes as well as to ask Belizeans to give back to the community. We have a lot of new stuff coming and we’re hoping that more and more Belizeans will come home for the celebrations as well as people at home will take part and enjoy.”

“And you were mentioning incentives for Belizeans to come home?”

Shari Williams

“Yes, our team at B.T.B. are about to announce official airlines for the September Celebrations. This airline is offering huge discounts to Belizeans living abroad to come home for the September celebrations. This is supposed to be announced shortly. As well as we’re launching a photo competition where we’re inviting people to send us the best picture—to post at our Belize Celebrations website—their best picture that they’ve ever had for a September celebration just to reminisce and to bring back the September feeling of what it was like as well as to have that documented.”

Marion Ali, Love News

“You have a few days on your calendar that have not been filled; can you say if you’re looking at new items to include on that?”

Shari Williams

“We have some applications where we send out a call inviting people to send us your activity for September Celebrations that you would like for us to include on the calendar. So we have several applications that we’re looking at to see which suggestions we’re going to endorse and which suggestions we’re going to include on the calendar. The team meets tomorrow to decide what we’re going to add and what we’re going to take off.”

The calendar is available on September Celebrations and facebook page, newspapers, and at the House of Culture.
