Late afternoon shooting in Old Capital

Earlier this morning the Police department held a press conference in which they proudly let the media know that there were no shootings since early Friday morning. But perhaps they spoke too soon.  After three this afternoon a patron of the Plum Tree Restaurant was shot. According to reports, twenty-six year old Julian Foreman of Chunox Village became rowdy and attacked the restaurant’s owner, forty-four year old Chong Wu Tan. Wu Tan then allegedly shot Foreman in self defense.  Several witnesses were kept inside the restaurant until they were interviewed by the Crimes Investigation Branch. That, however, didn’t slow down the businessman from continuing to serve his detained guests. News Five spoke to Wu Tan about the incident.

Chong Wu Tan, Shot Patron in Self-Defense

“Boy inside, drink beer and me only ask he and he find me and knock me in head—every time problem.”

Jose Sanchez

“Then you shoot ah?”

Chong Wu Tan

Chong Wu Tan

“Yah. He knock my head and me shoot ahn in foot.”

Jose Sanchez

“Self-defense? You protect yourself?”

Chong Wu Tan

“He knock mi head, he di fight me right and me shoot ahn in ih foot.”

Jose Sanchez

“Is he your friend? You know him?”

Chong Wu Tan

“I know him sometime he come drink beer. Every time he say he pay and he don’t pay and every time he act up with me.”

Jose Sanchez

“So you ask him to pay today and then he fight?”

Chong Wu Tan

“Today he don’t pay and I ask he where he going outside. And outside he fight me.”

Jose Sanchez

“So you shoot him in the foot?”

Chong Wu Tan

“Yeah and then me call police.”

Witnesses say Foreman was taken by taxi to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he is listed in a stable condition.  Though Wu Tan claims to have been hit by a drunk patron who refused to pay, Foreman’s version of the incident is different. In his report to police, Foreman claims that he merely slammed his hand on the counter of the restaurant and that’s what prompted Wu Tan to shoot him.

What I don’t understand is why the owner kept letting a deadbeat customer come in to drink when he never paid. It’s a business model I don’t understand.

  2. Rod says:

But yearwood say crime is down that’s why I say their is two worlds in Belize the one barrow and is gov. Live in and the one we live in this gov. Is full of drug dealers and gangsters don’t come to Belize tourist you’ll be robbed or killed.

  3. Al says:

According to the owner this has been a practice of this fool to drink the man’s beer and not pay, this is typical of some of our people. If you seem to have more than some Belezians they think you owe them something, they want something for nothing, they want the government to feed them, give them house and just give handout all the time. The people realy need to get some ambition and learn how to become entreprenuers, make tablata, cuttobrute, bake bread do something to help yourself.

  4. Disown mi country says:

Rod & Al, I agree with you. Belize always had less fortunate people, but they were ambitious. Many of my friends went to High School, back then referred to as college,on money from johhny cake, bread etc. that were made by their parents. Those people now cherish their education, because ot came with sacrifices.

  5. now i see says:

This “people” if you could call them so need to respect when they go into any chinese restaurant or shop. They go in and trow the money at the counter and say “chine give a chips”. Why dont they have manners? and say Mr Miss ( if you dont know their name) you dont hear they say the n word or maya kid or whatever your ethnic group is. Drunks like to take advantage of them too. Very good that M.r Chong protect himself. Shooting him was a little exagerated but, maybe he was hit hard on his head and he was scared.

Disown mi country — can’t say I like your chosen name, but your opinion here is right on.

It’s human nature — when we earn something, we value it and maximise its use in our life. Handouts? Not cherished so much.

Like so many other people here who have stayed out of trouble, I started working at a young age, doing any chore I could around the neighbourhood before I was 8, and have worked straight through for the next half-century plus. No regrets that life was sometimes hard, but pride that I stood on my own two feet.

  7. Suga City says:

ROD you are an @$$….hope u r not belizean how d F>>>>>> u tell tourists not to come to our country…..there are only a few tugs in this country who we need to lynch to get our country back…dammm so sad to listen to people like u …..shud deport ur @$$ to Guatemala …u idiot

  8. Yellow Belly says:

growing up in South Side Belize City in the 70′s and going to Nashus School, I was the minority, I was bullied and referred to as yellow belly panya, most creoles in my class were better off than me. they surely dressed better, and seemed to have more fun,. I was always working with my parents in the shop. now 40 years later. the creoles in South Side claim to be minority, marginalised, at risk, poor , disenfranchised, victims . why must I who overcame all my obstacles, came from the bottom of the barrel now give my money to these people. why are they now victims.Millions spent on South Side Poverty aleviation project. First thing they need to do is claim responsibilty for their situation.dat is number one , then we move one.

  9. Seletar says:

Suga City, the nice thing about lynching is it’s quiet and cheap — one rope can be used over and over again, as long as justice requires it.

I think you and Rod are both partly right — the Jewel is still one of the most beautiful places to live, but the thugs have made it a living Hell. I think the people need to get together and choose leaders who VOW to wage real war on the handful of killers who walk among us. I mean dead enemies in the street — it is beyond the capability of our weak justice system to protect us.

Then it will be fit for Belizeans and a welcome and safe place for tourists.

  10. BMNJ says:

I’m very proud of you “Yellow Belly.” If some of the Belizeans in the South Side could only envision and understand that with some hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice will take them a very long way in life, Belize would definitely be a better country for everyone.
