Robberies and Aggravated Assaults of city residents

Fitzroy Yearwood

Though the telethon was based in the heart of Belize City, the goodwill was not shared by all over the weekend. The violence in the old capital went under the radar but there were criminal activity within its confines starting as early as Friday afternoon. According to twenty-one year old Marvin Bul, just after two p.m., he was walking on Juliet Soberanis Street in the Belama Phase One area when he was approached from behind by two men.  One of the men, armed with a gun, hit him on the face and they robbed him of his Motorola cell phone, his wallet and a gold chain—all valued at nine hundred and seventy-five dollars. Two days later, just before four p.m. on Sunday, this time in South side Belize City, another man was robbed of his belongings at gunpoint. Akeem Villanueva reported that while he was socializing with two friends at a house on Lacroix Boulevard, a masked man, armed with a handgun approached them.  The gunman robbed him of a gold chain and two gold medals valued one thousand three hundred and twenty-five dollars. In both cases, the culprits managed to escape.  While investigations into those incidents continue, earlier today at a press conference at the Queen Street Police Station, Police Press Officer, Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, spoke about two incidents of aggravated assault that the department is also examining.

Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“We do have two aggravated assault reported. One Mister Anthony Sommerville reported that he was at home when someone known to him visited his residence—shouted out for him. This person produced what appeared to be a shotgun, pointed it towards him and told him I will kill you as soon as he returns. This person left the area before police arrived because of course Mister Sommerville did not come out of his house; he called police immediately. That’s one; nobody died so that’s the good news—this was on the thirtieth of June. The other aggravated assault is one Enrique Gongora Junior, a field worker of Belize Water Services Limited, he reported that on Saturday, thirtieth of June at seven-fifteen p.m., he was driving his car on the northern highway and upon reaching Belcan Bridge, a person in a silver Saturn that was following closely behind him approached him and that person, after trying to overtake his vehicle; that person produced what appeared to be a nine millimeter black handgun and said, “Bwai you di play.” And then the person drove off towards Central American Boulevard. We have detained someone in connection with this incident and hope to be filing charges soon.”
