House of Shotokan continues to dominate in matches in Mexico

The House of Shotokan Karate Academy continues to dominate in matchups against teams from Mexico. Over the weekend, karate students competed in both taekwondo and mixed martial arts in Chetumal. They all returned with medals and their proud teacher, Shihan Ray Kelly, spoke to News Five today about their success as well as upcoming tournaments that will have participation from his karate students.

“The students did exceptionally well. Our students, the children that we brought from the House of Shotokan, they competed in the taekwondo event and they did a fantastic job. All of them came home with gold medals. Our mixed martial arts team from the House of Shotokan Karate, they also competed against a Mexican mixed martial arts team from there and they did phenomenal also; all of them came home with wins.”

“So how many medals did you bring back in all?”

“In all, we brought back approximately twelve medals total, including the taekwondo and the mixed martial arts.”

“These competitions in Mexico, it’s something that you all do often?”

Shihan Ray Kelly

“This was an invitational event where our school was invited to this event there in Chetumal. We also have an invitation to another taekwondo event there in Cancun in the near future that we will be going to and participate. In August, our mixed martial arts team will be fighting UFC style in Chetumal, which is actually where make hits in the face, a little bit of blood, maybe some broken bones along the way but a lot of fun and our Mexican competitors will attempt to defeat our Belizean mixed martial arts fighters; that won’t happen obviously.”

Delahnie Bain

“So for your students, of course, there’s continuous training right?”

Shihan Ray Kelly

“Continuous training; our students that participated in the taekwondo event, they train here at the House of Shotokan Karate continuously. I train them in a different style because the taekwondo rules differ from the karate rules. We are a karate school, we practice karate but that particular event is like what’s in the Olympics right now, taekwondo. So our students here are training that type of fighting, that type of rules and hopefully, one day Belize can build a taekwondo team that can be up to the level of competing in the Olympics like the United States has right now and different countries.”

According to Kelly, they are also working on arranging tournaments with teams from the U.S.
