James Adderley captivating weekend moments in Sports

Good Evening, I’m James Adderley. Welcome, this to this portion of Sports Monday.

Twenty-eight of Belize’s Elite cyclists congregated at La Democracia on the Western Highway yesterday for the start of the 13th National Road Championship as presented by the Belize Cycling Association including the defending champion, Byron Pope who goes in holding the record with a time of 5hrs, 11 minutes, 41 seconds in this 95-mile ride. A race of this magnitude should have attracted more riders but that’s a story for another time and they’re off. At the turn from the Western Highway tp the Southern Highway, we find this trio busting past the Belmopan junction in a breakaway effort led by Peter Choto who is accompanied by Byron Pope and Jose Choto. Of course this four man chase group is hot on their heels and in fact, the main pelathon is well within striking distance.

Coming off the Cave’s Branch Bridge, the trio continues to effectively control the pace. Around St. Margaret’s Village, Peter Choto launches this cruel attack and indeed walks away while the other two cannot come up with the adequate response—at least not yet. Peter Choto holds on to the lead as he swings back at the turn around point inside Middlesex. While Byron Pope and Jose Choto hangs on to their position. It would be natural for Jose Choto not to work to reel in his brother and team member Peter Choto. However, keep track of this duo—cross country champ Giovanni Choto and Roger Troyer who have made their way out o the pack to make a run at the lead. When we rejoin the leader, Peter Choto, we find him replacing a punctured back wheel; forcing him to loose all of 47 seconds. Behind him, Giovanni Choto and Roger Troyer have joined Jose Choto. Unfortunately for Byron Pope, his ride ends on the Gap which features the most formidable climb in the race after developing bike problems.

At mile 33, we find Peter Choto being reeled in by the chase trio to make it an all Western Spirit 4 man lead. As the race streaks through Camalote Village towards the finish line at La Loma Luz, the 4-man Western Spirit lead remains intact. Meanwhile, we’re not sure you could call this a sprint finish but we’re certain Roger Troyer takes the WIN with a new record of 4 hours, 48 minutes 53 seconds, Jose Choto is 2nd, peter Choto is 3rd and Giovanni Choto finishes 4th overall in an all Western Spirit sweep. Peter Choto nevertheless grabs the U-23 National Road Championship win in 2012 so his brother and Cross Country Champion, Giovanni Choto takes 3rd place in the Elite Class.

At the Junior Level, Oscar Quiros continues his domination of this class with the overall win while Aiden Juan takes 2nd and Michael Wagner Junior, 3rd. Lian Stewart of M & M took the Masters Class and Shalini Zabaneh captured the female class. In the individual time trials, Byron Pope took the Elite Category, Robert Liam the Masters Class, Geon Hanson the U-23 Category, Steven Bissett the Master Class, Shalini Zabaneh the Women’s Category and Anfernee Young the Youth Class.

Checking the Belize City Senior Female Softball Competition, over the weekend, Telemedia burned Mirage Lady Rebels 4-3 and on Thursday, Telemedia blew away Hurricanes 46 to 1.

In football news, we caught up with the 1st division match between City Boys and Rural Stars at the MCC Grounds yesterday. Mark Leslie in 1st half play gets to fire this left foot to put City Boys on to the scoreboard; but misses the target. It’s Leslie again on the move and this time he is foiled by a brilliant save from Victor Villamil. A few minutes later, Delroy Andrews launches this spot kick from just on top the 18 and he finds the back of net to give City Boys a 1-zip lead. In 2nd half, Villamil dodges a bullet when he fumbles what should have been a routine save but he is rescued by his defence. Folks, City Boys seal the deal when Gilroy Thurton smacks this volley past Villamil as City Boys post the 2-zip victory. By the way guys, it would be reasonable to expect your shirts to be numbered.

Finally folks, the Interoffice Basketball league presents its All Star Night this Friday, June 29th, at Big Bird’s Isle and the playoffs begin on July 1st with all 8 teams seeing action.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
