Barrow speaks candidly about country and personal situation

Dean Barrow

If all goes according to plan, in two weeks Kim Simplis Barrow is scheduled return to Belize. Her mother stayed behind while the Prime Minister returned to matters of state. An outstanding budget presentation and a looming bond payment are major issues facing the prime minister. We asked the PM how he fares with the personal crisis. Barrow gave a candid response on the ongoing trials as husband and national leader.

Jules Vasquez, 7 News

“On a personal note, Ralph Fonseca once famously said when he was at an embattled crossroad that he doesn’t need this. And certainly you are not in that particular circumstance, but when the matters of state and the matters of one’s personal life are both so fraught, is there any point at which you say, “Mien, I noh need this headache. I need fi take care of mi wife?”

Dean Barrow

“Well if there is such a point, I don’t think it has yet been reached. I believe that certainly for the moment and as far as I can see into the foreseeable future, I am able to handle both things. And you know being away from home this time for ten days is not, in the normal circumstances, desirable. But as I said, it is so easy to communicate, it is so easy to keep in touch, it is so easy to make decisions from abroad that I don’t believe that people ought are to be unduly concerned about the absence. Now in terms of my frame of mind and well you know Kim’s being in the ICU did throw me for a loop, but that is something that after a couple of days you accustom yourself to and try to deal with. And as it turns out, she is in fact released from the hospital as I said doing very well in terms of the immediate circumstances; although, in longer term, the prospects are daunting. Long story short, I think—in fact I’m sure—that I am able to do the juggling act that the circumstances require right at this time and I don’t expect those circumstances to continue for much longer. Actually, as I’ve said to you, if Kim continues to be stable and to make immediate progress, she can hopefully be home in another two weeks and the local doctors can take over and that’s certainly going to be a great deal of comfort.”
