Blackout in the Belize District

If you experienced loss of power on Wednesday night, then you were in the Belize District.    It wasn’t industrial action caused by tensions between the electricity company and its union; the outages were caused by the weather. The first unplanned power outage occurred at nine-fifty-one p.m. and the entire City was cast into darkness. The interruption in supply occurred as strong winds caused a piece of equipment to make contact with energized lines at the Magazine Road Substation in Belize City.  Belize Electricity Limited dispatched crews to remove and restore the equipment. B.E.L. employees were required to take necessary safety precautions to complete works during the rain, and as a result, power supply was restored to Belize City at twelve-thirty-one this morning. While that outage affected Belize City, another outage at eleven-forty-nine p.m. affected mile eight to mile thirty five on the Northern Highway and villages along the old Northern Highway.  A second crew attended to that outage. And by two-fifteen a.m. power was restored to all the affected areas.
