Crime of passion; B.D.F. killed by his wife

Donovan Castillo

The violence over the three day weekend claimed the life of two persons and left several others recovering from gunshot wounds. The motives include revenge, unrequited love, and some others seem to be random. Crimes of passion however, are normally accompanied by confession.  The police department’s first murder victim was a Belize Defence Force soldier, who was killed in southern Belize on Monday morning. His common-law-wife has reportedly confessed to the crime, but there are several questions about what prompted the Raccoon Street resident to travel all the way to Dangriga and stab her common-law-husband to death. Was she a victim of domestic abuse or was it a case of “if I can’t have you, no one will?” Police are investigating every angle and News Five’s Delahnie Bain headed south to speak to the grieving family.

The end of a relationship was also the end of a life when thirty-seven year old B.D.F. Corporal, Donovan Castillo, was stabbed to death by his common-law-wife, thirty-five year old Marsha Reid on Monday morning. Castillo and Reid had an argument at a family house on Teacher’s Street in Dangriga, where he stays when he’s off-duty. According to Castillo’s cousin, musician Chico Ramos, Reid went after him while he slept.

Chico Ramos, Cousin of Donovan Castillo

“She gone by di house deh di morning and I think he mi gone out di night so ih mi still sleepy and so. I think dehn had wah argument and thing like dat and den he gone sleep and what she do, she lock up fi he nephew eena di room, tek weh fi he cellular phone and den afterwards she gone eena fi he room when he mi done di sleep and den she do weh have fi do.  Di man mi di sleep; she stab di man eena ih sleep. Ih stab ah een yah, een yah, one pan ih head and one een yah.  If he mi deh up, she couldn’t ah mi do dat cause ih mi wah be wah fight. If you si di young lady, she noh have wah bruise nor wah scratch pan ah. I si di young lady and she noh have wah bruise nor wah scratch.”

Castillo’s nephew, who was locked up to prevent him from calling for help, climbed over the bedroom wall and through rafters to get out. But Castillo, who had already been stabbed, stumbled out of his room and collapsed on the sofa.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer

“When police visited the scene they found Castillo in a sitting position in the living room with two apparent stab wounds to the neck, a cut to the neck area and we know that the police have recorded a caution statement from Miss Reid and we should be levying charges very soon in that case.”

There is speculation that Castillo’s death was triggered by domestic abuse; police are looking at that angle, but as far as his family knows, Castillo was trying to end the relationship.

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood

“In all fairness to Ms. Reid, we are investigating that also. A lot of women are in abusive relationships and some of these abuses are not reported to police. Some are documented and some are not so we are investigating whether or not she made any previous reports. I know that we have recovered the knife from the scene that we believe was the weapon used in that crime.”

Chico Ramos

“I noh hear nothing bout dat, I noh hear nothing bout dat. He dah noh wah violent guy dah kind ah way, especially pan women and thing like dat. Maybe, I noh know but I noh hear nothing bout dat. Look like dah mi wah relationship weh gone bad. I mean obviously ih look like he mi di try get out ah dis relationship and ih noh look like she mi ready fu dat.”

Chico Ramos

And even if Reid and Castillo did have problems, Ramos says his brutal murder did not have to be solution.

Chico Ramos

“Di guy dah mi wah cool, cool guy. Everybody know Donovan as wah cool, nice, pleasant, decent guy. You could ask anybody bout he, no because di man done gone. Yoh know di phrase, after ah man dead dah den dehn tell ah ih good, but dis dah real, di man dah mi wah very nice guy. I noh really like how dah gial deh stab up di man like dat, wah nice guy like dat. Di man dah noh wah troublesome person. She shouldn’t do dat to ah, dehn could ah mi work it out.”

The blood stained sheets; pillows and the sofa where Castillo succumbed to his injuries were all burnt in the backyard. His family is now preparing to lay him to rest this weekend. Delahnie Bain for News Five.

Castillo had recently returned to Belize after graduating from a training course with the U.S. Navy in February.

Donovan is a down to earth cool guy with not even a streak of violence. If the woman was being abused why did she go all the way south to find the man? I don’t believe Donovan ever touched a hair on her head. He is way too cool… very respectful and humble..not a trouble person either.

  2. Tarasbulba says:

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Griga again? It seems to me like criminals are now heading south to commit these henious crimes for whatever reason. Why did the family burn the blood stained sheets, pillow, and Sofa?. Those items could have been used as evidence mein?. Crazy world out there people, we need to let go and let God.

  3. Sad says:

Bro you are gone I still cannot believe you not hear with us you was easy going person not into violence I do not know marsha but I know he would have never put his hand on her so I know she is telling !@#$%^& lie. 4. drose flowers says:

yes we need to find God while there is still times.
only God knows what really happen, as much as there are obsessive women we have men like that too, just that its more common in men.

  5. Storm says:

Alleged domestic abuse in the City doesn’t justify hunting him to Dangriga and murdering him there.

If she’s convicted of murder, I say she must hang. Equal rights and equal punishment for all!

  6. now i see says:

Is not that is more common in men. The men usually dont report because they are ashame imagine him going to the police station and admitting that he is been abuse by his wife? They will make fun of him like crazy. Its so sad that in this part of the world the woman usually gets abuse from boy freinds, later husbands and sometimes their own children. I think, chico ramos knew that this guy was cheating too bad he was not at the house when this happen.

  7. lovely says:

  8. Sun says:

Don has been the sweetest person ever! What that murderer did should not go unpunished. In the past, such a gruesome act would have been dealt with severely. She took away a wonderful person from his family and friends. Everyone who knows Don can attest to the fact that he is an amazing person. Let justice prevail! To the family, my deepest condolences from me and my family. Don’s wonderful character will forever remain in our hearts. To those who did not know him, it would have been a privelege to have known him. He did not deserve what she did!

  9. Elgin Martinez says:

Why crime of passion and not Premeditated murder?Get it right.

  10. Niece says:

I can assure everyone that my uncle wouldn’t even harm a fly. He was trying to leave this crazy, obsessive woman and she trailed him to Dangriga to kill him. …….. This woman should and can never be considered his wife or common law wife for that matter. She was a girlfriend. He legally has a wife and it is not her. He and his wife have not been together for about 3 years now and never got legally divorced. He arrived in Dangriga at my grandmother’s house late that night from visiting his children in Belize City. That #** could have never killed my uncle while he was awake. Then she claims abuse? This woman is psycho! A NOTE TO THE BELIZEAN PUBLIC: Because this woman has a prosecutor as a family member and others in the police force she can easily walk away with cold blooded murder. I am the proud neice of the deceased Donovan Myvette Castillo and I’d like to give you some food for thought: 1. IS IT RIGHT FOR A PERSON TO TAKE A LIFE BECAUSE “SHE WANTED RENT MONEY” (AS SHE SO CLAIMS) OR ANY AT ALL? 2. WOULD SHE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE ON A TRAINED SOLDIER IN THE FORCE FOR 15 YEARS WHILE HE WAS FULLY ALERT? 3. WHAT HAPPENS TO HIS CHILDREN WHEN HE WAS THEIR ONLY BREAD WINNER? 4. WOULD A ‘CONTROLLING ABUSIVE MAN’ LIVE WITH HIS WIFE FOR MANY YEARS AND NEVER ONCE ABUSE HER? 5. WHY WOULD A MAN WHO IS ‘SUCH A DOG’ (as murderer, media, and corrupt police department is making him seem) GIVE ALMOST ALL HIS MONEY TO CHILDREN AND EX-WIFE HE’S MOVED ON FROM????? If this MURDERER walks as many others has done before I’ll be ashamed to call this country my own!

  11. heaven says:

even though we knw donovan the heavenly was watching every thing that happened and because we knw him doesnt mean that we knew exactly wat was happenin inside thierh omes so we cant swear for him but all i knw is dat justice shud comply an dat brutal murderer shud b punished

  12. chipmunk says:

I would like to say to everyone out there ( If you are without sin cast the first stone). No one is perfect everyone has faults but he was a loving father to his kids. He was not one to fight with a female. This act is not a crime of passion it was a crime of hate that was committed.

  13. friend says:

I have known Donovan for about fifteen years or more. I is hard to believe he will ever do something that deserves that kind of results. People need to stop and think about the reprucusion of their action, because just looking at it from a criminal point of view nothing will be done. I it far too clear to me that the act was premeditated and I cannot understand how the lady is not even in jail as yet , SOMETHING IS DEFINATELY WRONG. I do not know Ms. Reid but in all fairness, someone who commits a senseless act of that nature should never be allowed to walk away unpunished, even after they have confessed to the act. Remember lady you have left another four children fatherless and another woman like yourself in grief. SISTERS LETS GO BACK TO THE DAYS OF BEING OUR SISTERS KEEPER, RESPECT OTHERS PROPERTY TO REDUCE ACT OF THIS NATURE. I sympathize with the family of Mr Castillo and I pray that they can find it within themselves to forgive Ms Reid although it certainly might not be easy. I encourage Ms Reid to ask for forgiveness for what she has done because at the end of the day, you have taken a live and one that was worth living.

  14. friend says:

LETS GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE THAT WAS NEVER HIS WIFE. PEOPLE NEEDS TO START RESPECTING OTHER PEOPLES PROPERTY TO AVOID ACT OF THIS NATURE. REMEMBER LADY, YOU HAVE LEFT ANOTHER FOUR CHILDREN FATHERLESS AND A WOMAN LIKE YOURSELF IN GRIEF. THINK ABOUT IT AND ASK GOD FOR HELP BECAUSE ONLY HE CAN HELP YOU AND THERE IS NO USE LYING BECAUSE THE TRUTH WILL COME TO LIGHT SOMEDAY. IF YOU ARE TO TAKE A POLE ON THAT MAN THE WORLD WOULD SAY THAT HE WAS NOT VIOLENT, ONLY YOU TWO KNOW WHAT HAPPEN. BUT IT WOULD APPREAR THAT YOUR ACT WAS PREMEDITATED.

  15. Really? says:

Only two people knew what happened, and unfortunately one is dead. Sad indeed. How about reports that dude was abusing her in public trying to force her to go to his house. Using his bike to hit her according to several witnesses? A death threat was sent to the her just days before. We don’t know the full story so let’s not rush to judgement. If she is hanged then what should be done to gang members who murder innocent women and children? My heart goes out to the grieving family.

  16. wisdom says:

IF THE MAN WAS SO “GOOD” WHY IN THE WORLD WAS HE NOT WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN?????????????????/ WHY HE HAD TO CHEAT ON HIS WIFE TO TAKE ON A CRAZY WOMAN!!!!!!! PEOPLE STOP BEING FOOLISH AND LET THESE MEN PRETENDER GAMES FOOOL ALL OF UNU. OBVIOUSLY THERE WAS A PROBLEM THAT CAUSED HIM TO NOT BE WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN. THIS SHOULD GO AS A MESSAGE TO THE CHEATING HUSBANDS AND BOYFRIENDS AND THE WOMEN THAT THEY GO WITH!!!!! YOU HAVE YOUR WIFE AND CHILDREN STAY WITH THEM AND LEAVE OUTSIDE WOMEN ALONE!!!! A WOMAN’S HEART IS NOTHIONG TO PLAY WITH AND ONE OF THESE DAYS UNU WILL FIND UNU MATCH!!!!!!1 CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY ALL TOGETHER WE ARE STILL HUMANS AND DONT DESERVE SUCH A DEATH.

  17. Sad says:

@ wisdom he was and excellent father and damn good husband for over 16 plus yrs until !@#$% came and broke up a happy home his wife move on with the kids and he was still trying to find his way in this world he never did cheat on his wife she left him 3 yrs ago it was hard she did it you stop think you know everything you do not know one $#!% that lady not crazy she cannot deal with rejection so what she did she trying to make ppl have sympathy on her say she was abuse that #**(# was not abuse in no way he would never hit a woman he would walk away from the situation thats what a real man do beczs you never have a real man in your life thats why you talk that way you need to tell woman now a days when a man do not want your @$$ just leave the person alone

  18. Sis says:

PPL PPL PLZS DO NOT LISTEN TO ALL THE NEGATIVE THINGS PPL SAYING ABOUT MY BRO HE WAS A DAMN GOOD FATHER SON BRO AND UNCLE HE WAS AN GOOD PARTNER TO HIS WIFE FOR OVER 18 YRS HE WAS NOT A WOMAN BEATER OR ABUSER

  19. Hyde says:

It’s obvious this two had something big going…what she did was not right, but sometimes people may react different, yes we know she went there all the way from Belize , but we don’t exactly know that she was there to kill him, she didn’t go inside his house cause she force herself in, it seems he took her there, we don’t know what he might have done to her, there is always enough that humans can take,.. It was wrong but to the guys family, common you all know there was something more to it, this is the reason women in Belize suffer so much domestic violence, because it’s always wrong when they do bak. Many men specialy if they are involved with police feel like thier gods and they are so over the world and they take advantage of foolish women who give them importance. The family will what they want , I’d say do a good investigation ,but that is almost never possible.

  20. suazo says:
