Trinidad & Tobago’s PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s parting words

Kamla Persad-Bissessar

Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s maiden visit to the Jewel was a brief working call during which she attended the Commonwealth Local Government Forum launched at the Princess on Wednesday morning.  Despite her delayed arrival the Trinidadian head of government was on hand for the launch of a twenty-three million dollar initiative to further develop small and medium-sized enterprises within the Caribbean.  After the formalities the prime minister was greeted by members of the small Trini community before heading over to the Calypso Restaurant where, along with other foreign dignitaries, she was treated to various cultural presentations on Wednesday night.  This morning, before departing for the airport, PM Kamla spoke briefly with News Five about the importance of the CARILED program as well as her overnight stay in the Old Capital.

Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago

“[It was a] very important meeting for the Caribbean region through the CARICOM for small and medium enterprises.  I think six countries will initially be targeted over a six year period [with] twenty-three million Canadian dollars coming into the region.  I think that will be very good for us for training and for creating capacity leadership with respect to SMEs [Small and Medium Enterprises].  So all in all I think it was a good launch.  We enjoyed the entertainment last night and the hospitality of the people of Belize and the Government of Belize so we want to thank you all very much for that hospitality and warmth.  I find that the Belizean people are very similar to the people of Trinidad & Tobago, many things [are] similar, our climate, our personalities and the warmth.  I did enjoy my short stay and will come back another day so thank you all very much.”
