12 years for Attempted Carnal Knowledge

Fifty-five year old Oliver Arthurs, a resident of Independence, is tonight serving a twelve-year sentence at the Belize Central Prison after being convicted of the attempted rape of a minor in June of last year.  The verdict was handed down by Justice Troadio Gonzalez on Tuesday evening in the Dangriga Supreme Court following deliberation by a nine-member jury.  On June third, 2011 a ten year old girl reported to her mother that Arthurs had tried to sexually abuse her while she was playing with a cousin in a yard after school that evening.  According to the child, Arthurs called her into a nearby home and when the relative inquired what he wanted he chased her away.  The man then proceeded to secure the door by placing a dishwashing bowl behind it prior to throwing her unto a bed.  Arthurs then undressed himself and began molesting the child after which he offered her money and biscuits in an attempt to keep the incident unreported.  The little girl, nonetheless, told her mother who later confronted Arthurs before making a police report.  The minor was examined and while it was discovered that she was not carnally known, a doctor certified that there were bruises to her genitals.  Arthurs, who appeared in court unrepresented, remained silent during the trial and was found guilty of attempted carnal knowledge.

  1. Storm says:

Castrate all sexual assailants. It’s the only way to make sure they cannot violate another person in the future.

  2. Ricky Malthus says:

All crimes are heineous. Is the gravity of attempted carnal knowledge greater than the gravity of attempted murder to warrant sentences of 12 years and 8 years imprisonment respectively? In Belize we imprisoned a man for two (2) years because he stole a Red Bull and and another (Bennett) for failure to report to Police for a non-crime of being deported from the USA. My question and concern are when do we reform our antiquated justice system to provide real justice.

  3. NoNo says:

jails should be empted and burrying ground should be full. or open a cemetry for all criminals. cuase all they do is go to jail and eat well, get fat and come rite back out to hurt people. Getting fat with our tax money.
