8 years for Attempted Murder

Eight years behind prison. That was the sentence for fifty year old Jose Hernan Ochaeta who was found guilty exactly one week ago, on May second, for the Attempted Murder of Evangelina Lucero Uck. The sentence, which is considered lenient for the crime, was imposed by Justice Troadio Gonzalez around ten this morning in the Belmopan Supreme Court after six character witnesses spoke well of the former teacher. Ochaeta was initially charged for the May 2007 attempted murder of Ignacio Lucero Senior, his wife Hilda Lucero and daughter Evangelina after they were stabbed several times on the evening of the twenty-eighth. Ochaeta had visited their home after an altercation with Ignacio Ochaeta Junior, who is his son-in-law, earlier that day. And last Wednesday, a jury of nine found him guilty of one of the three attempted murder charges. In the trial, Ochaeta was represented by Attorneys Ellis Arnold and Simeon Sampson while the prosecutor was Sheneiza Smith.

There’s no moral difference between murder and attempted murder — they share the same evil intent. If we won’t hang attempted murderers, we should at least let them die in prison.

Eight years in prison is insufficient to punish the crime, to make an example, and to protect the public.
