Cancer Month is being celebrated in Belize by spreading awareness
Cancer Month is currently being celebrated countrywide by activists and survivors of the various forms of the debilitating illness through a series of activities leading up to the annual Cancer Walk. Among other events to be held during the month of May is a first-of-its-kind symposium where the topic of prostate and testicular cancers will be discussed. The highlight, nonetheless, is the yearly walkathon from Celina’s in Ladyville to the office of the Belize Cancer Society on Mercy Lane in Belize City. News Five spoke with Ivorine Bulwer who told us that the organization has put together a national itinerary to observe Cancer Month.

“During the course of this month we are celebrating Cancer Month under a theme and that theme is: ‘Prevent and control cancer: Together we can do it’. [It’s] a very provocative theme and this is why in collaboration with the Belize Cancer Center, the Belize Medical and Dental Association we are conducting quite a number of activities related to public education. For this month we are doing, it’s a full month, a full month of activities. We are also partnering with our other sister branches in Belmopan, Dangriga, Corozal and the branches they will be having their walks, their Cancer Walk, and Belmopan and Dangriga will be having their Cancer Walk on the twelfth and Corozal and Belize City will be having theirs on the twenty-sixth. The Belize City walk leaves from Celina’s in Ladyville at five a.m. sharp to Belize City. For this month, because as you know cancer is an ongoing challenge for families throughout the country of Belize so we will be conducting quite a number of public awareness sessions at business sites and we’ll be appearing on the various media talk shows during the mornings and at nights. So on all the talk shows just look out for us, the community billboard, look inside the Amandala and you will see the schedule of activities as it relates for the talk shows.”
