Opposition challenges Election in Court

The prime minister announced at a press conference that he will take the oath on Friday for his new term in government, but the People’s United Party says it’s not conceding the elections. According to P.U.P. leader, Francis Fonseca, the elections were neither free nor fair and that the electoral process was tainted with irregularities.

“As we meet this afternoon, I would have hoped to report to you, regardless of the outcome that on March seventh Belize had free and fair elections; regrettably, this has not been the case. Across the country there have been credible, reliable, documented reports of abuse and illegality in the conduct of our election process. Our party has assembled a team of legal advisors, who are examining the documented evidence and reviewing the legal options available. I can report to the nation that it is the intention of the People’s United Party to file several election petitions in respect of the March seventh General Elections. Through-out the election campaign, I made it absolutely clear that the P.U.P. would engage in a vigorous campaign but would always respect the final decision of the Belizean people. That respect is premised on free and fair elections and on the obligation and duty to ensure that the will of the Belizean people is not thwarted or denied. As I speak, I am yet to receive an official report on the election results from the elections and boundaries commission; despite this, it is my understanding that the U.D.P. leader, Mr. Barrow is announcing plans to form a government. In an election where unofficial results show that there is a thirty vote separation between the two major political parties in determining which party forms the government, all of our statements, actions and decisions must be grounded in respect and humility.”
We are with you Francis, there comes a time when one must not immediately concede, now is that time. Furthermore you have done a marvelous, fantastic and very significant job in a very limited amount of time, despite the resignations, and very adverse condition exisiting within the party. We salute you, support you and respect any decissions you make. Congrats!!!!
i think that the people of the country has made their decision and we have to accept it. if the majority went red well God help them and if the blue had won same thing, lets learn to accept the decision of the people. in my case i never voted cause really i don’t want the UDP nor no longer trust the PUP any more. so basically i boycott the election and i know many Belizeans did since we’re tired of lies and both parties are the same way help in a side but screw the country in another way. so Mr. Fonseca please relax accept the decision of the people and God willing you’ll be elected PM in 5yrs time if this UDP gov. doesn’t do what is right for this country

The PUP has every right to go ahead with the petition, we even witnessed pay offs in the Cayo district done by the UDP government even when the OAS was present to observe our election process. Also Penner and Contreras had many Guatemalan illegal votes in their favor in Cayo, a week before election Contreras was in Melchor on live Guatemalan TV and radio asking Guatmalans to go across and vote for him. There is also facts coming out that during the huge illegal naturalization of Guatemalans, many of Penner’s people crossed the Guatemalans illegally into Belize at the Los Tambos area. This is not rumors, this is what happened and will continue to happen.
Congrats to the PUP especially Mr. Francis Fonseca for his hard work and dedication within the party. I do believe that this election is an enormous victory for the PUP …yes this is a huge victroy for the pup…to take the lick we took in 2008…AND TO TURN IT AROUND IN FOUR YEARS TO SUCH A CLOSE MARGIN is a hugeee victory for us
First of all…the law has to be changed. Calling an election in 30 days makes no sense!!!
There should be at least 90 days given when calling an election.

Well their was irregularities, all right, In San Pedro the lights went out and some boxes were changed.
In Benque a violent groups of guatemalans in the Santa Cruz area waited for money, they say “they’re not moving until they are accommodated, they were granted there wish at 5:15pm and 20 taxi cars arrived and the line got 80 more just before 6:00pm
elections are over lets work with our leaders and we the peole will bring the change .lets not seat and wait to see what the government will give us . as this is a very popular way of thinking in bze ,untill we change our ways change will come. this is not a perty that winn its the people the majurty who won
Lets move on Men. Crying and fighting only makes some of our fanatics get to the point that they want to kill their grandmothers and cousins. Please be humble and accept the results Mr Fonseca, at times as the leader you have to stand your ground and tell those instigators behind you to stop and shut up, because they don’t let others hear your voice. Lets move on. PUP was there and doesn’t matter how much time we had PUPs will always be there. Why do you think many didn’t vote? The hurt is still there, lets not continue bruising the old hurt. I hate to see judges decide elections, and I hate more to see any election stolen.
In the close and questionable cases, there should be a full and impartial investigation, maybe including OAS participation.
If we tolerate corrupt elections, we throw away our democracy and freedom. Belizean democracy is at a crisis point. I hope we survive it and come out stronger and freer.
I admire the humility of Francis Fonseca this man deserved to be Prime Minister but we have a just God if UDP stole this election nothing good will become of them

Yes, I agree. The election process was not democratic. First the Election and boundaries commission was headed (and will continue) by a UDP stooge, UDP campaign finances came from the public purse, illegal registration of voters, illegal registration of immigrants, election officers were hand picked UDP stooges. So where can you see the slightest semblance of democracy? This situation is igniting future elections to be marred with violence and uprisings. I think, we can expect in the future serious election turmoil, like that occurring in Jamaica and in Central America, thanks to Barrow and his corrupted public servants manning election 2012. The people in the Rural areas of Belize will not give in to Barrowmaniac style of governance. In the North, Barrow owes the death of Anastacio Gutierrez. Farmers are turned helpless by the Barrow government, the NGOs are being challenged (NO TEST WI). Barrow should remember that his new government was catapulted to office by corruption.
Mr. Francis I by all means agree with you to challenge this!!!!!We shouldnt stay with whatever it comes thats y we have laws and regulations and for those who comment their inept remarks about the UDP and the PUP being the same have no sense they should just keep thier comments to themselves!!!
Belizeans are intelligent people, and we ALL know our rights have been violated in these 2012 elections. The elections were stolen, but every fat fowl has their Sunday……God is watching!!
