U.D.P. to govern most town halls
The results of the Municipal Elections may have been completely dwarfed by the overwhelming emphasis placed on the wins and losses of ministerial hopefuls. Throughout the night counting clerks were busy tallying votes received by each mayoral and councilor candidate. When it was all said and done it was clear that the wave of red that had washed all nine municipalities in 2009 did not have the same effect on Wednesday’s election. In Punta Gorda Town, Fern Gutierrez was the only U.D.P. councilor candidate to survive the blue tsunami that swept the Toledo District. Conversely, Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nunez was the only P.U.P. councilor candidate to be elected to the town board in San Pedro. In Belize City the U.D.P. maintained its stronghold on City Hall with all eleven of its candidates being elected. Interestingly, councilor Eric Chang topped the municipal poll for a second time garnering thirteen thousand, eight hundred and ninety-six votes. The People’s United Party will take control of town halls in Orange Walk and Dangriga.
