Pundits prediction for the seventh

Francis Gegg

Our broadcast of the general and municipal elections starts at six in the morning with reporters covering all thirty-one constituencies and nine municipalities. Inside our studios, to crunch the numbers and provide commentary and analysis, a team of experienced pundits will be on air from the start to finish. News Five spoke to two of our panelists. Francis Gegg and Ann Marie Williams; both agree that this election will be one to watch.

Francis Gegg, Political Commentator

“Looking for trends, simple trends can tell big stories. For example, we will be looking for what I consider strong constituencies for a particular party, to see if we can see any weaknesses and trends in that sense; as I have done previously 1998 and in 2008. I predicted that 1988 would be a landslide victory for the P.U.P. and I predicted 2008 would be landslide victory for the U.D.P. Again the way I have arrived at my numbers and perspective, I have predicted that we are gonna see the pendulum swing in favour of the P.U.P. I think that what we do need to look at are the independents because as I have said before, when you have an independent more often than not he will take votes from the incumbent. In the case of Carlos Diaz, I think that would not be the case because he was a previous P.U.P. Minister and now going against both the red and blue, more than likely he could harm the P.U.P.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, during that discussion, will the panel be putting forward the perspectives of both the P.U.P. and the U.D.P. so as to present a very fair discourse for the public?”

Francis Gegg

“We always try to make it balance because as I have said, if you have a horse in the race then you cannot be objective and I don’t have a horse in this race, so I am trying to be as objective as always and to look at all the issues.”

Ann Marie Williams

Ann Marie Williams, Political Commentator

“When it comes to elections you cannot be sure until the last vote is counted. Who would’ve thought that Hutchison for the U.D.P. would’ve beaten Ralph Fonseca for the P.U.P.?  There are certain things that we have to watch out for. We look at Freetown, something will happen that will surprise some people and may not surprise some people. Last election, the now P.U.P. Leader, Francis Fonseca won that division narrowly by sixteen votes. Now, there is the first-time Belizean of Asian descent going up against him; we don’t know how that will play out.”

Andrea Polanco

“So you believe this election will be a very exciting and interesting one?”

Ann Marie Williams

“I feel so and I will say that it is never over until it is really, really over and that will be until Thursday morning. It is one that people should remain glued to their television and it is an interesting time to track political trends and to see how things change.”

Channel Five will also have the live broadcast on streaming video at
