Elections and Boundaries approves perusal of binders

Josephine Tamai

On Thursday afternoon, the People’s United Party applied for judicial review of a decision taken by the Chief Elections officer, Josephine Tamai, turning down a request by the Corozal Southeast area representative, to peruse election binders for that constituency. According to the Tamai, the request could not be entertained at the time because of limited resources.

“The request that we have for him is to be a scrutineer and that has been approved. In respect of the binders, we did receive a request from the People’s United Party for one Sylvia Cowo, to peruse the binders. That request was denied and the correspondence that we wrote back to the People’s United Party, that correspondence actually informed them that the request cannot be approved for the period that they requested. In the letter we informed them that proper supervision needs to be done by the registering officer because that is mandated by law. We have a lot of applications especially for the Corozal District and the officers; the amount of staff is limited for us to have somebody supervising that at this time. We also included in the letter that they can resubmit their application and that has not been done.”
